Instead of using subtle tints, the new icons are fully adapted to system accent colors.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Some, including me, however don&#8217;t like the new folder icons and prefer the previous ones. First, click the link below to download the Ubuntu 25.10&#8217;s default icon theme:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+source\/yaru-theme\/25.10.3-0ubuntu1\/+build\/31334552\/+files\/yaru-theme-icon_25.10.3-0ubuntu1_all.deb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download Ubuntu 25.10 icon theme<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>For choice, you may go to <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+source\/yaru-theme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this page<\/a>, and select download the default icon theme for Ubuntu 24.04 or even 22.04.<\/p>\n<p><b>2<\/b>. After downloaded the icon theme package (.deb), assume you saved it in the default user Downloads folder, press Ctrl+Alt+T to open terminal and run command to install it:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install ~\/Downloads\/yaru-theme-icon_25.10.3-0ubuntu1_all.deb<\/pre>\n<p>After successfully installed the package, you&#8217;ll see the old folder icons few moments later after re-open (or navigate folder) Files (aka Nautilus file manager).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50897\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-yaruicon2510-700x501.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-yaruicon2510-700x501.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-yaruicon2510-300x215.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-yaruicon2510.webp 751w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>3<\/b>. To prevent it from automatically installing back the new icon theme, run the command below to lock the theme package:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-mark hold yaru-theme-icon<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50898\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-hold-yaruicon-700x520.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-hold-yaruicon-700x520.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-hold-yaruicon-300x223.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-hold-yaruicon-768x571.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-hold-yaruicon.webp 846w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Method 2: Override the Folder Icons Only<\/h3>\n<p>If you want to just replace folder icons with the old ones, while leaving app icons and all others unchanged, then you may try overriding the icon files.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> First, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command below to copy the default icon theme to user&#8217;s local directory:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Run command to create the local icon theme directory, in case it does not exist:\n<pre>mkdir -p ~\/.local\/share\/icons<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Copy the default Yaru icon theme to local directory:\n<pre>sudo cp -R \/usr\/share\/icons\/Yaru* ~\/.local\/share\/icons<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Finally, change the ownership to yourself:\n<pre>sudo chown $USER:$USER -R ~\/.local\/share\/icons<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After that, your Ubuntu will take use the icons in this local directory (for current user only) instead of the system one under \/usr\/share\/icons directory.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50899\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/copy-yaruicontheme-700x501.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/copy-yaruicontheme-700x501.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/copy-yaruicontheme-300x215.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/copy-yaruicontheme.webp 751w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Download the Ubuntu 25.10 icon theme from the link in Method 1, then extract.<\/p>\n<p><i>Run <code>sudo apt install file-roller<\/code> to install archive manager for being able to decompress .deb package.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50900\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/extract-yaruicon2510-700x392.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/extract-yaruicon2510-700x392.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/extract-yaruicon2510-300x168.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/extract-yaruicon2510-768x430.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/extract-yaruicon2510.webp 1061w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Finally, go to the extracted folder (&#8220;yaru-theme-icon_25.10.3-0ubuntu1_all&#8221;) and navigate to its <code>usr\/share\/icons<\/code> sub-folder. There you&#8217;ll see the default Yaru icons and its variants.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50901\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/yaruicon2510-folder-700x380.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/yaruicon2510-folder-700x380.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/yaruicon2510-folder-300x163.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/yaruicon2510-folder-768x417.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/yaruicon2510-folder.webp 1167w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then, all you need to do is simply copy (or move) all the &#8220;places&#8221; sub-folders, that contain the folder icons in different sizes, into the corresponding sub-directories under .local\/share\/icons. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yaru\/22&#215;22\/places<\/li>\n<li>Yaru\/24&#215;24@2x\/places<\/li>\n<li>Yaru\/48&#215;48@2x\/places<\/li>\n<li>Yaru-olive\/24&#215;24@2x\/places<\/li>\n<li>Yaru-olive\/48&#215;48@2x\/places<\/li>\n<li>Yaru-yellow\/24&#215;24@2x\/places<\/li>\n<li>Yaru-yellow\/48&#215;48@2x\/places<\/li>\n<li>And others (a total of 103 folders)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>To make life easy<\/b>, right-click on blank area in the icons folder and click &#8220;Open in Terminal&#8221; to open terminal with that folder as working directory:<\/p>\n<p><b>IMPORTANT: Don&#8217;t run the command below from other directory. It will delete your files!!!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Then, run command to auto-find out all files (under current directory) with &#8216;places&#8217; in path and delete all others:<\/p>\n<pre>find .\/ ! -regex '^.\/Yaru.*\/\\(.*places.*\\)?' -delete<\/pre>\n<p><b>NOTE again: DO only run this command within the &#8220;$Home\/Downloads\/yaru-theme-icon_25.10.3-0build1_all\/usr\/share\/icons&#8221; directory.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/delete-nonplaces.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-50902\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/delete-nonplaces-700x411.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/delete-nonplaces-700x411.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/delete-nonplaces-300x176.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/delete-nonplaces-768x451.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/delete-nonplaces-1536x902.webp 1536w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/delete-nonplaces-1320x775.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/delete-nonplaces.webp 1548w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After that, only the icons under &#8220;places&#8221; sub-folders left. You can finally copy them (all the left directories) to <code>.local\/share\/icons<\/code> either using file manager or by running the command below:<\/p>\n<pre>cp -R .\/Yaru* ~\/.local\/share\/icons<\/pre>\n<p>If everything&#8217;s done correctly, the folder icon should change few moments later (re-open file manager).<\/p>\n<h3>Undo<\/h3>\n<p>To undo method 1, simply open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and first run command to un-lock the package:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt-mark unhold yaru-theme-icon<\/pre>\n<p>Then, install back the new theme package:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install yaru-theme-icon<\/pre>\n<p>For the method 2, simply delete the local theme folders by running command:<\/p>\n<pre>rm -R ~\/.local\/share\/icons\/Yaru*<\/pre>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For those who don&#8217;t like the new default folder icons in Ubuntu 26.04, here&#8217;s a step by step guide shows how to restore to the previous 25.10&#8217;s folder icons.
