But for those prefer native <code>.deb<\/code> package, so far only Ubuntu 26.04 matches the dependency requirements. Meaning old Ubuntu will probably need to switch to Flatpak or Snap package to try out the latest versions.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the UI backend changes, the 4.0 version also added support playing <b>WEBP and PNG animations<\/b> and saving <b>JXL<\/b> images. It now reloads the location when renaming current folder, and reload the current folder as well when expanding the tree item.<\/p>\n<p>The built-in editor has been updated with new color operations, such as darker edges and 8 colors effects, as well as mosaic, blur, and option to fill selected area with custom color.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51072\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gthumb-censoroptions-700x443.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gthumb-censoroptions-700x443.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gthumb-censoroptions-300x190.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gthumb-censoroptions-768x486.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gthumb-censoroptions.webp 1133w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t know why, gThumb also changed its app id to <code>app.gthumb.gthumb<\/code>, then changed back to <code>org.gnome.gthumb<\/code> later.<\/p>\n<p>Other changes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Display thumbnails in left instead of bottom in image view.<\/li>\n<li>New toggle to enable\/disable drag&#8217;n&#8217;drop images.<\/li>\n<li>New &#8220;repeat&#8221; option in image resizing dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Make app name translation-able.<\/li>\n<li>Add option to disable rotation for videos.<\/li>\n<li>Remove web albums, contact sheet, adjust time, find duplicates.<\/li>\n<li>Allow to change the quantity of the applied filter for many filters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51074\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gthumb4-viewer-700x435.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gthumb4-viewer-700x435.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gthumb4-viewer-300x186.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gthumb4-viewer-768x477.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gthumb4-viewer.webp 1321w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For more, you need to either dig in <a href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/GNOME\/gthumb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source code<\/a> or try it out yourself, as there&#8217;s no official release note and NEWs file includes quite few information about it.<\/p>\n<h3>Get gThumb 4.0<\/h3>\n<p>gThumb 4.0 so far is in early development stage. There&#8217;s no official installers, but you may build it from source tarball.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/GNOME\/gthumb\/-\/tags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download gThumb (source tarball)<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>For Ubuntu 26.04, you may try it out by using this <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntuhandbook1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/gthumb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unofficial PPA<\/a>, though it includes newer version of <code>libraw<\/code>, that <b>will break other graphics apps (e.g., shotwell) that require the default one (libraw) in system repository<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>To add the PPA and install gthumb 4.0 alpha, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run commands below one by one:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/gthumb\r\nsudo apt update\r\nsudo apt install gthumb<\/pre>\n<p>(Optional) To downgrade <code>libraw<\/code> library and gthumb to stock versions, first run command to install ppa-purge tool:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install ppa-purge<\/pre>\n<p>Then, purge the PPA which will also downgrade the installed packages:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/gthumb<\/pre>\n<p>If <code>ppa-purge<\/code> failed (e.g., due to broken repositories), then manually remove the PPA and gthumb packages via the commands below:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/gthumb\r\nsudo apt update\r\nsudo apt remove gthumb gthumb-data gthumb-dev<\/pre>\n<p>And, manually install back the old version of libraw library:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install libraw23t64=0.21.5b-1ubuntu1<\/pre>\n<p>The version number &#8220;0.21.5b-1ubuntu1&#8221; may change as time goes on, run <code>apt policy libraw23t64<\/code> to see the version table.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>gThumb, the free open-source image viewer and organizer, is finally porting to GTK4 plus LibAdwaita.
