If you want, it&#8217;s however easy to install this MATE desktop environment to turn your Ubuntu to &#8220;Ubuntu MATE 26.04&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51077\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51077\" class=\"size-large wp-image-51077\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604-700x437.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604-700x437.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604-300x187.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604-768x479.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604-1320x824.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604.webp 1509w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-51077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ubuntu 26.04 with MATE desktop<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Back in December 2025, Ubuntu announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/lists.ubuntu.com\/archives\/technical-board\/2025-December\/003082.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ubuntu MATE will be non-LTS for 26.04<\/a> because it missed the LTS requalification requests.<\/p>\n<p>The community discussed about the future about Ubuntu MATE, and, the project lead made a post last month <a href=\"https:\/\/discourse.ubuntu.com\/t\/ubuntu-mate-seeking-maintainers\/79264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seeking maintainers<\/a>. But, until the final release of Ubuntu 26.04, I didn&#8217;t know that there&#8217;s NO Ubuntu MATE 26.04.<\/p>\n<h3>Install MATE in Ubuntu 26.04<\/h3>\n<p>For MATE users who don&#8217;t want to switch to Debian, Linux Mint, or other Linux distributions with MATE edition, then you may try the MATE desktop in Ubuntu 26.04 repository by following steps.<\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE: MATE Desktop in Ubuntu 26.04 repository is backported from Debian upstream (Debian Unstable). The Desktop has only community support (through e.g., volunteers and enthusiasts), but NO desktop related security updates or features.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> First, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open up a terminal window. Then, run command to refresh cache:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Next, run the command below to get the full MATE desktop environment:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install ubuntu-mate-desktop<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51078\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-mate2604-700x528.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-mate2604-700x528.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-mate2604-300x226.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-mate2604-768x580.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/apt-mate2604.webp 872w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the installing process, it will ask you to choose the display manager for login screen. It&#8217;s an non-functional example session file that comes with <code>lightdm<\/code> by default.<\/p>\n<p>To get rid of it, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command below to edit the config file:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo nano \/usr\/share\/xsessions\/lightdm-xsession.desktop<\/pre>\n<p>When file opens (in terminal), add new line <strong>Hidden=true<\/strong> in the end. Finally, press Ctrl+S to save and Ctrl+X to exit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51081\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lightdm-defaulthide-700x496.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lightdm-defaulthide-700x496.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lightdm-defaulthide-300x212.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lightdm-defaulthide-768x544.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lightdm-defaulthide.webp 983w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Uninstall MATE Desktop<\/h3>\n<p>To remove the MATE desktop in Ubuntu 26.04, run command in terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T):<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove --autoremove ubuntu-mate-desktop mate-session-manager plymouth-theme-ubuntu-mate-logo<\/pre>\n<p>Keep an eye in the terminal output.
