It may be great for security and auto update, but lacks a choice for those who don&#8217;t like it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51235\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51235\" class=\"size-large wp-image-51235\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/chromium-mintbuild-700x443.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/chromium-mintbuild-700x443.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/chromium-mintbuild-300x190.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/chromium-mintbuild-768x486.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/chromium-mintbuild.webp 1199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-51235\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chromium Deb edition built by Linux Mint<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you prefer the native <code>.deb<\/code> package, here I&#8217;m going to show you how to install it via:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Linux Mint package<\/b> &#8211; trustworthy, but a little bit hard to install for beginners.<\/li>\n<li><b>Ubuntu PPA<\/b> &#8211; easy to install, but a bit less trustworthy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Debian upstream also builds the latest Chromium as DEB package, which is however available in the Unstable repository and it may break dependency.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Install Chromium browser from Linux Mint repository in Ubuntu 26.04<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/linuxmint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linux Mint<\/a>, the top popular Ubuntu based distribution, dislikes snap package. It blocks all snap packages and maintains some popular app packages as DEB, including Chromium and Firefox, that are no longer available in Ubuntu.<\/p>\n<p>The <code>apt<\/code> package manager in Ubuntu 26.04 features <code>Include<\/code> and <code>Exclude<\/code> options, allowing to only index certain packages from a repository. Meaning it can be safe to add Linux Mint repository in Ubuntu without breaking anything.<\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE: The steps below only work for Ubuntu 26.04 on modern Intel\/AMD platform.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1. First launch text editor<\/b> and write the following content in an empty document.<\/p>\n<pre>Types: deb\r\nURIs: http:\/\/packages.linuxmint.com\r\nSuites: zena\r\nComponents: upstream\r\nInclude: chromium\r\nSigned-By: \/etc\/apt\/keyrings\/linuxmint-keyring.gpg<\/pre>\n<p>It tells to add the Linux Mint repository but only include the <code>chromium<\/code> package, while all others are blocked.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51236\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/add-mint223repo-700x555.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/add-mint223repo-700x555.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/add-mint223repo-300x238.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/add-mint223repo-768x609.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/add-mint223repo.webp 772w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Next, press Ctrl+Shift+S to open the save file dialog. Click the address bar, type <code>\/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d<\/code> and hit Enter to navigate to that directory. Name the file as <code>linuxmint.sources<\/code> and finally click Save it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51238\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/save-mint223repo-700x447.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/save-mint223repo-700x447.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/save-mint223repo-300x191.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/save-mint223repo-768x490.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/save-mint223repo.webp 940w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> After created the .sources file, go to link below and click download the latest key file:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"http:\/\/packages.linuxmint.com\/pool\/main\/l\/linuxmint-keyring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download Linux Mint Keyring<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Select download the latest deb package, e.g., &#8220;linuxmint-keyring_2022.06.21_all.deb&#8221;, then click open with App Center and install.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51239\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/install-mintkeyring-700x400.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/install-mintkeyring-700x400.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/install-mintkeyring-300x172.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/install-mintkeyring-768x439.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/install-mintkeyring.webp 1261w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>4.<\/b> For security reason, press <code>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/code> to open terminal, and run command to move the key file to the \/etc\/apt\/keyrings directory:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo mv \/etc\/apt\/trusted.gpg.d\/linuxmint-keyring.gpg \/etc\/apt\/keyrings\/<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51240\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-mintupdate-700x480.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-mintupdate-700x480.png 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-mintupdate-300x206.png 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-mintupdate-768x527.png 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-mintupdate.png 838w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>5.<\/b> Finally, run the command below to refresh package cache:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p>If everything goes well, it will show you a line that looks like &#8216;Hit\/Get x http:\/\/packages.linuxmint.com &#8230;&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>After that, run the command below to install chromium browser:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install chromium<\/pre>\n<p>It will start downloading the deb package from mint repository and then install it on your system.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51241\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-chromiummint-700x504.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-chromiummint-700x504.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-chromiummint-300x216.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-chromiummint.webp 731w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For future chromium updates, check &amp; install via Software Updater along with system package updates.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 2: use Ubuntu PPA<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re OK with third-party Ubuntu PPAs, then, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~xtradeb\/+archive\/ubuntu\/apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">xtradeb apps PPA<\/a> that maintains the most recent Chromium DEB packages for a few years.<\/p>\n<p>The PPA so far supports <b>Ubuntu 22.04<\/b>, <b>Ubuntu 24.04<\/b>, <b>Ubuntu 25.10<\/b> and <b>Ubuntu 26.04<\/b> on modern Intel\/AMD, ARM device (e.g., RasPi, Snapdragon X), and 64-bit PowerPC devices. And, it supports <code>amd64v3<\/code> architecture type for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.<\/p>\n<p>1. To add the PPA, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xtradeb\/apps<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password when it asks and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51242\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/xtradeb-ppa2604-700x485.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/xtradeb-ppa2604-700x485.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/xtradeb-ppa2604-300x208.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/xtradeb-ppa2604-768x533.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/xtradeb-ppa2604.webp 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. Then, refresh package cache, though the last command should do it automatically.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<p>3. Finally, install chromium deb package:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install chromium<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51243\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-xtrachromium2604-700x485.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-xtrachromium2604-700x485.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-xtrachromium2604-300x208.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-xtrachromium2604-768x533.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/apt-xtrachromium2604.webp 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, you may use Software Updater to check and install updates for the browser package afterward.<\/p>\n<h3>Uninstall:<\/h3>\n<p>To uninstall the chromium deb package, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt remove --autoremove chromium<\/pre>\n<p>To remove the xtradeb apps PPA, use command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:xtradeb\/apps<\/pre>\n<p>And, if you installed the browser from Linux Mint repository, then just delete the key and sources files by running command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo rm \/etc\/apt\/keyrings\/linuxmint-keyring.gpg \/etc\/apt\/sources.list.d\/linuxmint.sources<\/pre>\n<p>Finally run <code>sudo apt update<\/code> to refresh cache.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chromium user but don&#8217;t like running app in sandbox environment?
