And, it updated the SVT-AV1 AV1 video encoder to the latest 4.1.0 version for better ARM platform support.

The FDK_AAC/FDK_HAAC, ALAC and PCM encoders are now allowing for 16‑bit audio input, when the source audio is higher than 16‑bit, making it compatible with more audio formats while keeping audio quality clean when converting from higher‑bit‑depth sources. However, it must dither when converting from >16‑bit → 16‑bit, even for lossy encoders, to prevent ugly rounding errors and noise that happen while downsampling to 16bit.

For Linux users, the new version added WebM MIME type support, telling system that it is capable of opening and handling this video format. So Linux desktop will show it as recommended app in the WebM file’s “Open With” dialog, and allow to register the application as a candidate for the default program to open the video format.

For Windows, this version improved default preset selection behavior, which fixed the issue when user trying to use presets created in older versions, or preset is in disable mode, i.e., due to lack of hardware.

It also fixed the file type selection in the save panel, automatic audio track name generation, as well as the summary description of HDR video.

The macOS app also features improved handling of unsupported presets. It now will fall back to the default preset if the current default has an unsupported video encoder. And, the Sparkle that provides in-app updates has been updated to version 2.9.2.

Other changes in HandBrake 1.11.2 include:

Disable dithering when not needed, avoids unnecessary processing.

Special fix for ALAC encoder.

Fixes for crash and memory leak.

For more changes as well as the official installer packages, go to Github releases page.

Get HandBrake 1.11.2

The link above includes the source tarball and installers for Linux, Windows, and macOS.

Besides the official Flatpak package, Ubuntu and Linux Mint user may also select install the native .deb package from unofficial PPA, which supports Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 on modern Intel/AMD and ARM (e.g., Snapdragon X) platforms.

To add the PPA and install handbrake, run the commands below one by one in terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/handbrake
sudo apt update
sudo apt install handbrake handbrake-cli

Tips: the command line UI uses
HandBrakeCLI
as executable file.

HandBrake, the free open-source video transcoder, released new 1.11.2 version a few days ago.
