The Ubuntu Core developer, Thomas Ward, answered that <b>MATE is not going away and a new development team has been working on it.<\/b> <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>MATE as a flavor has a new development team who have stepped up in place of it\u2019s last leader and developers, and they are working hard to fix bugs, update the software, etc. for the future!<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_51077\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604.webp\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51077\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604-700x437.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-large wp-image-51077\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604-700x437.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604-300x187.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604-768x479.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604-1320x824.webp 1320w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/mate2604.webp 1509w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-51077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ubuntu 26.04 with MATE desktop<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The new developers haven&#8217;t formally introduced themselves yet, but they are already working to cover the missed items and gaps, and may quite possibly have a 26.10 release in October of 2026 according to the answers.<\/p>\n<p>Besides preparing for the next 26.10 release, the new development team will also cover the fixes for the MATE desktop packages in current 26.04 LTS. <b>Except no 26.04 installer image, nothing has changed!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>For those who want Ubuntu MATE 26.04<\/b>, either install the standard Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop or Server then install the MATE desktop environment, and, I&#8217;ve written a <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2026\/04\/how-to-install-mate-desktop-in-ubuntu-26-04-lts\/\" target=\"_blank\">step by step guide<\/a> for it.<\/p>\n<p>Or, upgrade from Ubuntu MATE 25.10 via the commands below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Press Ctrl+Alt+T to open terminal, and run command to refresh apt cache:\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Then, install all available package updates.\n<pre>sudo apt full-upgrade<\/pre>\n<p>Some updates may need a system restart afterward to apply.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, run the command below and follow terminal screen to start the upgrading process.\n<pre>sudo do-release-upgrade<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Ubuntu MATE 24.04, the upgrade channel is not opened yet. You probably need to wait after the 26.04.1 point release.
