With the latest 51 development version, it&#8217;s finally ported to GTK4 with some new functions and API updates.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnome-sushigtk4.webp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51790\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnome-sushigtk4-700x257.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnome-sushigtk4-700x257.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnome-sushigtk4-300x110.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnome-sushigtk4-768x282.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnome-sushigtk4-1536x565.webp 1536w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnome-sushigtk4.webp 1849w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In case you don&#8217;t know about Sushi, it&#8217;s a macOS Finder&#8217;s Quick Look style application, allowing user to press <b>Space<\/b> key to get a quick preview of files in Nautilus (aka GNOME Files), and press again to quit.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/gnome-sushi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14 years old GNOME Project<\/a>, which was discontinued a few years ago due to lack of maintainers. One of GNOME Files maintainer revived the project several months ago and released version 50.<\/p>\n<p>With the new 51 development release, it&#8217;s finally ported to <b>GTK4 + LibAdwaita<\/b> that looks modern and native in recent GNOME Desktop releases.<\/p>\n<p>It now automatically switches between <em>light<\/em> and <em>dark<\/em> style according to your desktop color scheme.<\/p>\n<p>And, the video preview support single click to pause\/resume playback, and double-click to maximize and restore preview window, while, a maximize icon is also available in header bar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51791\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/sushi-light-700x427.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/sushi-light-700x427.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/sushi-light-300x183.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/sushi-light-768x468.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/sushi-light.webp 971w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The new version also added double-click support, along with a header bar icon, allowing to maximize or restore the window when previewing photo images.<\/p>\n<p>For HTML preview, it now prompts &#8220;<i>Remote content is blocked to protect your privacy<\/i>&#8221; when you clicking on a remote content, such as a URL. It now shows a loading spinner when loading a file that takes longer. It wraps lines in text viewer, so you don&#8217;t need to scroll horizontally to view long line content.<\/p>\n<p>There are as well many other changes, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add more mime types to the LibreOffice viewer.<\/li>\n<li>Add XHTML mime type.<\/li>\n<li>Overhaul and document plugin API.<\/li>\n<li>Translation updates and various other improvements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Get GNOME Sushi 51 Beta<\/h3>\n<p>The source tarball as well as the release note are available in the Gitlab source page via the link below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/GNOME\/sushi\/-\/releases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GNOME Sushi Release Note<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Besides building from the source, Arch Linux has made the new version to its GNOME Unstable repository, and Fedora is building it for the next 45 version. While, Debian and Ubuntu user may keep an eye on <a href=\"https:\/\/tracker.debian.org\/pkg\/gnome-sushi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this page<\/a> for the Sushi package status.<\/p>\n<p>For other Linux with GNOME, Sushi is available to install through the GNOME Nightly repository.
