While, the GNOME 51 Final release is scheduled for September 16th in next week.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-51861\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnomeonarch-700x444.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnomeonarch-700x444.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnomeonarch-300x190.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnomeonarch-768x487.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gnomeonarch.webp 1281w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the last Alpha and Beta releases, GNOME 51 introduced many exciting new features, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add &#8220;<strong>New Document<\/strong>&#8221; context menu.<\/li>\n<li>Add standard API for apps to apply <strong>background blur<\/strong> effect.<\/li>\n<li>Option to set touchpad <strong>disable while typing timeout<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Initial support for <strong>reduced-motion<\/strong> setting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>New fingerprint management<\/strong> interface.<\/li>\n<li>SVG-based cursor implementation.<\/li>\n<li>Support changing <strong>touchpad scroll speed<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Option to disable a touchpad when a mouse is plugged in.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the code for <strong>legacy NVIDIA drivers<\/strong> support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new RC release includes primarily bug-fixes, translation updates, as well as some minor new features.<\/p>\n<p>The GNOME Remote Desktop now supports <b>Kerberos multi-user remote login<\/b>, meaning multiple users can remotely establish their own GNOME sessions on a Linux machine, with their identities authenticated through Kerberos.<\/p>\n<p>And, it can now handle remote graphical logins for users who have already authenticated using Kerberos.<\/p>\n<p>The remote desktop feature also added support for <b>smartcard redirection<\/b>, meaning a smartcard connected to the client computer can be made available to the remote GNOME session.<\/p>\n<p>As you may know, GNOME is moving away from the legacy <code>gnome-keyring<\/code> toward a modern new Rust-based alternative called oo7-daemon. The RC release updated Fedora&#8217;s PAM rules makes the login process work with that newer infrastructure.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_51500\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51500\" class=\"size-large wp-image-51500\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gdm51a-700x438.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gdm51a-700x438.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gdm51a-300x188.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gdm51a-768x480.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/gdm51a.webp 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-51500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">gnome login screen handled by gdm<\/p><\/div>\n<p>GNOME Calendar now supports drag&#8217;n&#8217;dropping events on top of other events. When an event is focused, pressing Ctrl+Tab focuses the month cell behind it. And, when a month cell is focused, pressing Shift+Tab now focuses the first event in front of it.<\/p>\n<p>The Night Light feature now supports hardware with CTM but no GAMMA_LUT, meaning it now works on Apple Silicon and certain other ARM-based devices.<\/p>\n<p>Nautilus, aka GNOME Files, added a new keyboard shortcut to focus file chooser filename entry.
