Thanks to FFmpeg 8, it now supports decoding <b>Advanced Professional Video (APV)<\/b> codec, the videos captured by Samsung devices such as Galaxy S26 Ultra.<\/p>\n<p>It also supports decoding <b>ATRAC3<\/b> and <b>ATRAC9<\/b>, the Sony developed proprietary audio codecs mainly associated with Sony&#8217;s gaming consoles.<\/p>\n<p>The new release now supports <b>CEA-708 closed captions<\/b> in MP4, a type of digital TV subtitle standard mainly used for television broadcasts. And, it now supports <b>SRT listener mode<\/b>, act as the receiving server waiting for the sender to connect to it.<\/p>\n<p>And, the SFTP support has been improved with public key authentication and ED25519 hostkey support.<\/p>\n<p>Other changes in VLC 3.0.24 include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Super Resolution scaling with Moore Threads GPUs.<\/li>\n<li>Support NV12 DirectShow capture in Windows.<\/li>\n<li>Add Linux Flatpak build support.<\/li>\n<li>Remove NPAPI browser plugin.<\/li>\n<li>Remove broken youtube.lua plugin.<\/li>\n<li>And various bug-fixes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Install VLC 3.0.24<\/h3>\n<p>The official release note as well as the download links for Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS are available in VideoLan website via the link below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-to-vivid-purple-gradient-background has-text-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/www.videolan.org\/vlc\/releases\/3.0.24.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VLC 3.0.24<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>For Ubuntu, the new version is available to install as the official SNAP package in Ubuntu Software or App Center.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-52104\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/vlc3024-snap-700x435.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/vlc3024-snap-700x435.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/vlc3024-snap-300x186.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/vlc3024-snap-768x477.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/vlc3024-snap.webp 1176w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t find the official Flatpak package, but the community maintained one is still at version 3.0.23 at the moment of writing, and you can get it in <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/en\/apps\/org.videolan.VLC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flathub.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For those who prefer native <code>.deb<\/code> package, I&#8217;ve built the new version into this <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~ubuntuhandbook1\/+archive\/ubuntu\/vlc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unofficial PPA<\/a> for Ubuntu 26.04, Ubuntu 24.04, Ubuntu 22.04, and their based distributions, such as Linux Mint 22.x.<\/p>\n<p><b>To add the PPA and install VLC deb package<\/b>, launch terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the commands below one by one:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/vlc<\/pre>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<pre>sudo apt install -t \"o=LP-PPA-ubuntuhandbook1-vlc\" vlc<\/pre>\n<p><b>NOTE: The PPA packages were built with Ubuntu&#8217;s default FFmpeg libraries<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The PPA build farm has NO Internet access during the build process, meaning build FFmpeg 8.1.2 in bundle needs lots more uploads (FFmpeg plus its dependency libraries), making hard to maintain.<\/p>\n<p>(Optional) To remove the PPA and uninstall VLC .deb package:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1\/vlc<\/pre>\n<pre>sudo apt update<\/pre>\n<pre>sudo apt install --autoremove vlc<\/pre>\n<p>Keep an eye on the terminal output before answering to remove VLC, because the <code>--autoremove<\/code> option will try to remove packages that were automatically installed as dependencies and are no longer needed.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VLC, the free open-source and cross-platform media player, released new 3.0.24 version in last week.
