Here&#8217;s an extension that brings it back in recent GNOME Desktops.<\/p>\n<p>Ubuntu previously supported global menus when GNOME 2 and Unity were its default desktop environments. Since GNOME 3, there have been some extensions that implement this feature, but most of them discontinued.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/firefox-globalmenu.webp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-52162\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/firefox-globalmenu-700x344.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/firefox-globalmenu-700x344.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/firefox-globalmenu-300x147.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/firefox-globalmenu-768x377.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/firefox-globalmenu.webp 806w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As far as I know, <a href=\"https:\/\/extensions.gnome.org\/extension\/10288\/global-menu-for-gnome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Menu for GNOME<\/a> is the only extension that support the feature in recent GNOME.<\/p>\n<p>However, it shows the same menu regardless of which app is focused, rather than dynamically updating the menu for the focused app.<\/p>\n<h3>Orbit Global Menu<\/h3>\n<p>In this post I&#8217;m going to introduce &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Unmade760\/orbit-global-menu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orbit Global Menu<\/a>&#8220;, an extension so far supports <b>GNOME 49 &amp; 50<\/b> (Ubuntu 26.04, Fedora 44 Workstation).<\/p>\n<p>The extension tries to fetch and display <strong>a menu from D-Bus<\/strong> if the focused application publishes a menu through it.<\/p>\n<p>If NOT, it falls back to show a menu <b>built from the app&#8217;s documented keyboard shortcuts<\/b>. And, when you click a menu item, it sends that key combination to the window.<\/p>\n<p>It dynamically updates the menu for the focused app, but so far it supports <strong>171<\/strong> applications that do not publish menu through D-Bus, though the number is growing.<\/p>\n<p>And, the <strong>global menu is not always identical to the one inside the focused app window<\/strong>, as NOT all menu items support keyboard shortcuts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-52163\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/vlc-globalmenu-700x358.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/vlc-globalmenu-700x358.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/vlc-globalmenu-300x153.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/vlc-globalmenu-768x393.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/vlc-globalmenu.webp 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>How to Install the Orbit Global Menu<\/h3>\n<p>The developer is going to make the extension into Gnome EGO, try searching it in <a href=\"https:\/\/extensions.gnome.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/extensions.gnome.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, user may install it manually by copy&#8217;n&#8217;pasting the &#8220;global-menu@unmade.space&#8221; from source into user&#8217;s <code>.local\/share\/gnome-shell\/extensions\/<\/code> directory.<\/p>\n<p>To do so, launch terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the commands below one by one:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, run command to clone the source from github:\n<pre>git clone https:\/\/github.com\/Unmade760\/orbit-global-menu.git<\/pre>\n<p>Run <code>sudo apt install git<\/code> if git command not found.<\/li>\n<li>Then, create the target directory in case it does not exit, navigate to source, and copy the extension sub-folder to that directory:\n<pre>mkdir -p ~\/.local\/share\/gnome-shell\/extensions\/<\/pre>\n<pre>cd orbit-global-menu<\/pre>\n<pre>cp -r 'global-menu@unmade.space' ~\/.local\/share\/gnome-shell\/extensions\/<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Finally, compile all the GSettings XML schema files:\n<pre>glib-compile-schemas ~\/.local\/share\/gnome-shell\/extensions\/'global-menu@unmade.space'\/schemas<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-52164\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/install-orbitglobalmenu-manually-700x482.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/install-orbitglobalmenu-manually-700x482.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/install-orbitglobalmenu-manually-300x206.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/install-orbitglobalmenu-manually-768x528.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/install-orbitglobalmenu-manually.webp 824w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When done, <b>log out and back in<\/b>. Finally, launch &#8220;Extension Manager&#8221; or &#8220;Gnome Extensions&#8221; app (available in App Center) to enable the extension, and configure its appearance and app menus.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-52165\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/enable-configureogm-700x480.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/enable-configureogm-700x480.webp 700w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/enable-configureogm-300x206.webp 300w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/enable-configureogm-768x526.webp 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/enable-configureogm.webp 1132w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(Optional) For the applications that publish menu through D-Bus, run the commands below one by one from the source folder to install the daemon:<\/p>\n<p>First, install the dependency libraries:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install python3-gi python3-dbus gir1.2-gtk-3.0<\/pre>\n<p>Then, navigate to the source folder (<code>cd orbit-global-menu<\/code>) and install the daemon as Python package:<\/p>\n<pre>pip install --user . --break-system-packages<\/pre>\n<p>Run <code>sudo apt install python3-pip<\/code> if pip command not found.<\/p>\n<h3>Uninstall:<\/h3>\n<p>For any reason, you may remove the extension easily by using either &#8220;Gnome Extensions&#8221; or &#8220;Extension Manager&#8221; app. Or, simply delete the extension folder by running command:<\/p>\n<pre>rm -r ~\/.local\/share\/gnome-shell\/extensions\/globalmenu\\@ShiroOSL.github.io\/<\/pre>\n<p>Also remove the daemon installed as Python package:<\/p>\n<pre>pip uninstall global-menu --break-system-packages<\/pre>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Missing the global menu that adds focused application&#8217;s menus to the top panel?
