But when I plugged in ones today, sound was coming from both headphones and speakers in Ubuntu 14.04.<\/p>\n<p>This is a very <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+source\/linux\/+bug\/477226\" target=\"_blank\">old bug<\/a> with alsamixer. If you happen to have this issue on Ubuntu 14.04, you may try below steps to fix it:<\/p>\n<p><b>1<\/b>. Launch a terminal window from the Dash, App launcher, or via Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key. When it opens, run below command and hit enter:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:None;\">alsamixer<\/pre>\n<p>When you see following screen, use Left\/Right arrow key to navigate and choose <b>Auto-Mute<\/b>, then enable it via Up\/Down arrow key.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/alsamixer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/alsamixer-600x317.jpg\" alt=\"alsamixer\" width=\"600\" height=\"317\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/alsamixer-600x317.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/alsamixer-450x238.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/alsamixer.jpg 819w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> If it does not work, try <b>GNOME ALSA Mixer<\/b> which can be installed from Ubuntu Software Center or by running below command in terminal:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer<\/pre>\n<p>Then start it from the Dash or via <code>gnome-alsamixer<\/code> command and enable <b>Auto-Mute Mode<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gnome-alsamixer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gnome-alsamixer-600x316.jpg\" alt=\"gnome-alsamixer\" width=\"600\" height=\"316\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gnome-alsamixer-600x316.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gnome-alsamixer-450x237.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/gnome-alsamixer.jpg 951w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Does not work? Well, here is how to install the latest ALSA driver for a &#8220;HDA Intel&#8221; sound card in Ubuntu 14.04, which fixed the issue for me.<\/p>\n<p>First make sure you have <code>dkms<\/code> package installed.  Install it either from Ubuntu Software Center or via below command in terminal:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:None;\">sudo apt-get install dkms<\/pre>\n<p>Then select download the latest ALSA driver from <a href=\"https:\/\/code.launchpad.net\/~ubuntu-audio-dev\/+archive\/ubuntu\/alsa-daily\/+packages?field.name_filter=&#038;field.status_filter=published&#038;field.series_filter=trusty\" target=\"_blank\">THIS PAGE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Depends on your Kernel version, check it out via <code>uname -r<\/code> command, <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/check-kernel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/check-kernel.jpg\" alt=\"check-kernel\" width=\"378\" height=\"75\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>select download:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms_xxx.deb for 3.13 kernel<\/li>\n<li>oem-audio-hda-daily-lts-utopic-dkms_xxx.deb for 3.16 kernel<\/li>\n<li>oem-audio-hda-daily-lts-vivid-dkms_xxx.deb for 3.19 kernel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After you installed the .deb package, restart you computer and plug \/ re-plug in headphones to see results.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I rarely use headphones on my Ubuntu laptop.
