There&#8217;s a simple Nautilus, Caja, Nemo extension called &#8220;Folder-Color&#8221; that allows to change the color or emblem of a folder, or set the global folder color from context menu.<\/p>\n<p>Linux Mint has integrated this feature into its Cinnamon and MATE Desktops. All you have to do is to right-click on a folder and choose a color or emblem from &#8220;Folder&#8217;s color&#8221; menu:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/folder-color-extension.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/folder-color-extension.jpg\" alt=\"Folder Color \" width=\"600\" height=\"440\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/folder-color-extension.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/folder-color-extension-450x330.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Only for changing Folder Color:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For Ubuntu 16.04, the tool has been made into the universe repository, but it only allows to change the color of folder icons.<\/p>\n<p>Open terminal <b>(Ctrl+Alt+T)<\/b> and run the command below to install it for Unity or Gnome:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt install folder-color<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/install-folder-color.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/install-folder-color-600x110.jpg\" alt=\"Install folder color\" width=\"600\" height=\"110\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6028\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/install-folder-color-600x110.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/install-folder-color-450x82.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/install-folder-color.jpg 910w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For MATE Desktop, use the command below instead:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt install folder-color-caja<\/pre>\n<p>Apply changes by running command <b>nautilus -q<\/b> or <b>caja -q<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>For Full Feature version:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For full feature version that changes the color or emblem and global folder color, use the <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~costales\/+archive\/ubuntu\/folder-color\" target=\"_blank\">developer&#8217;s PPA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Open terminal and run commands to remove previous version and install the extension from PPA:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt remove folder-color folder-color-caja folder-color-common\n\nsudo add-apt-repository ppa:costales\/folder-color\n\nsudo apt update\n\nsudo apt install folder-color folder-color-caja<\/pre>\n<p>Also restart your file browser via command <code>nautilus -q<\/code> or <code>caja -q<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>For Ubuntu MATE, if this does not work for you, try the commands below and finally restart Caja browser:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none\">sudo ln -s \/usr\/lib\/i386-linux-gnu\/girepository-1.0\/Caja-2.0.typelib \/usr\/lib\/girepository-1.0\/Caja-2.0.typelib\n\nsudo ln -s \/usr\/lib\/x86_64-linux-gnu\/girepository-1.0\/Caja-2.0.typelib \/usr\/lib\/girepository-1.0\/Caja-2.0.typelib<\/pre>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Want to make a difference on your file folders?
