Here&#8217;s how to install or upgrade it via PPA in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 14.04, and Linux Mint 18, 17.<\/p>\n<p><b>What&#8217;s new in Blender 2.78:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>spherical stereo rendering support for VR<\/li>\n<li>a grease pencil for full 2D drawing and animations<\/li>\n<li>viewport rendering improvements<\/li>\n<li>freehand curves drawing over surfaces<\/li>\n<li>bendy bones support<\/li>\n<li>alembic support<\/li>\n<li>The Cycles Render Engine has NVIDIA Pascal support<\/li>\n<li>new physics capabilities, and various new add-ons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/blender-278-splash.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/blender-278-splash-600x337.jpg\" alt=\"Blender 2.78 splash\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/blender-278-splash-600x337.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/blender-278-splash-450x253.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/blender-278-splash.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Install\/upgrade to Blender 2.78 via PPA:<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~thomas-schiex\/+archive\/ubuntu\/blender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Schiex<\/a> is maintaining a PPA with most recent Blender release for Ubuntu 16.10, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 14.04, and Linux Mint 17, 18.<\/p>\n<p>So you can easily install Blender 2.78 or upgrade from a previous release by following the steps below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"arconix-box arconix-box-red\"><i class='fa fa-2x pull-left fa-exclamation-triangle'><\/i><div class=\"arconix-box-content\">The PPA is abandoned, see <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2021\/06\/install-blender-2-93-ppa-ubuntu-20-04\/\">this tutorial instead<\/a>.<\/div><\/div>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Open <b>terminal<\/b> from Unity Dash, App Launcher, or via Ctrl+Alt+T keys.
