Here&#8217;s how to install it via PPA in Ubuntu 16.04.<\/p>\n<p>After 9 months of development, Pidgin 2.12 brings following changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fix an out of bounds memory read in purple_markup_unescape_entity<\/li>\n<li>Fix use of uninitialised memory if running non-debug-enabled versions of glib<\/li>\n<li>Updated AIM dev and dist ID&#8217;s to new ones that were assigned by AOL.<\/li>\n<li>TLS certificate verification now uses SHA-256 checksums.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed SASL external auth for Freenode.<\/li>\n<li>Removed the protocol plugin: <b>MSN<\/b>, <b>Mxit<\/b>, <b>MySpaceIM<\/b>, <b>Yahoo!<\/b>, <b>Facebook (XMPP)<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Fixed gnutls certificate validation errors that mainly affected google (Dequis)<\/li>\n<li>Replaced instances of d.pidgin.im with developer.pidgin.im and updated the urls to use https.<\/li>\n<li>Fixed issue of messages being silently cut off at 500 characters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/pidgin-212.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/pidgin-212-600x336.jpg\" alt=\"Pidgin  IM 2.12\" width=\"600\" height=\"336\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/pidgin-212-600x336.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/pidgin-212-450x252.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/pidgin-212.jpg 999w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>How to Install Pidgin 2.12 in Ubuntu 16.04, Linux Mint 18<\/h4>\n<p>The official Pidgin PPA was dropped years ago. Besides building the new release from source, you can use this <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~jonathonf\/+archive\/ubuntu\/backports\" target=\"_blank\">third-party PPA<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf\/backports<\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/pidgin-unofficial-ppa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/pidgin-unofficial-ppa-600x81.jpg\" alt=\"pidgin-unofficial-ppa\" width=\"600\" height=\"81\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/pidgin-unofficial-ppa-600x81.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/pidgin-unofficial-ppa-450x60.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/pidgin-unofficial-ppa.jpg 748w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Then launch Software Updater and you&#8217;ll see Pidgin 2.12 available for upgrade:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/update-pidgin.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/update-pidgin-450x312.jpg\" alt=\"update-pidgin\" width=\"450\" height=\"312\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/update-pidgin-450x312.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/update-pidgin-600x417.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/update-pidgin.jpg 729w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or you can run command to install \/ upgrade the messenger:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt update && sudo apt install pidgin<\/pre>\n<p>Finally restart your computer to apply changes.<\/p>\n<p><b>How to Restore:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To restore Pidgin to the stock version (2.10.12) in Ubuntu 16.04, run command to purge the PPA via ppa-pure tool:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:jonathonf\/backports<\/pre>\n<p>If you want to keep the Pidgin 2.12 in your system, you may also remove the PPA since it contains various other (low impact) packages, either via Software &#038; Updates -> Other Software tab or by running command:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:jonathonf\/backports<\/pre>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pidgin internet messenger 2.12 was released a few days ago on last Thursday.
