Here&#8217;s how to install it via PPA in Ubuntu.<\/p>\n<p>FreeType 2.8 features <b>complete support for CFF2 and OpenType Variation Fonts<\/b>, <b>a new  function `FT_Face_Properties&#8217;<\/b>, <b>25 more scripts added to the auto-hinter<\/b>, and various fixes.  <\/p>\n<p>Changes between FreeType 2.7.1 to 2.8.0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support for OpenType Variation Fonts is now complete.<\/li>\n<li>A new  function `FT_Face_Properties&#8217; allows the control of some module and library properties per font<\/li>\n<li>Support for following more scripts added to the auto-hinter:\n<ul>\n<li>Adlam, Avestan, Bamum, Buhid, Carian, Chakma, Coptic, Cypriot, Deseret, Glagolitic, Gothic, Kayah, Lisu, N&#8217;Ko, Ol Chiki, Old Turkic, Osage, Osmanya, Saurashtra, Shavian, Sundanese, Tai Viet, Tifinagh, Unified Canadian Syllabics, Vai<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>`Light&#8217; auto-hinting mode no longer uses TrueType  metrics for TrueType fonts. <\/li>\n<li>And see more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freetype.org\/index.html#news\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Install FreeType 2.8 via PPA in Ubuntu:<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~glasen\/+archive\/ubuntu\/freetype2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stefan Glasenhardt&#8217;s PPA<\/a> has built the 2.8 release for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, and their derivatives.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> To add the PPA, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:glasen\/freetype2<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type in your password (no visual feedback due to security reason), read the ppa description and hit Enter.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/freetype-28-ppa-600x94.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"94\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/freetype-28-ppa-600x94.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/freetype-28-ppa-450x70.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/freetype-28-ppa.jpg 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Then you can upgrade the FreeType library via Software Updater:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/upgrade-freetype-600x431.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"431\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6847\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/upgrade-freetype-600x431.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/upgrade-freetype-450x323.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/upgrade-freetype.jpg 728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or install it via commands in terminal:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt update && sudo apt install freetype2-demos<\/pre>\n<p><b>Uninstall:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To restore the FreeType library to the stock version in your Ubuntu main repository, purge the PPA via command:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:glasen\/freetype2<\/pre>\n<p>Or you can remove PPA, which does not affect installed FreeType2 library, via <b>Software &#038; Updates<\/b> utility Other Software tab.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FreeType, a freely available software library to render fonts, has reached the 2.8 release.
