{"id":6890,"date":"2017-06-22T15:16:16","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T15:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/?p=6890"},"modified":"2017-06-22T15:17:16","modified_gmt":"2017-06-22T15:17:16","slug":"install-opus-1-2-audio-library-in-ubuntu-16-04-14-04","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2017\/06\/install-opus-1-2-audio-library-in-ubuntu-16-04-14-04\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Install Opus 1.2 Audio Library in Ubuntu 16.04, 14.04"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/opus-logo245.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6891\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Opus audio codec reached the new major 1.2 release a few days ago with many quality improvements, new features, and bug fixes.<\/p>\n<p>Changes in <a href=\"http:\/\/opus-codec.org\/release\/stable\/2017\/06\/20\/libopus-1_2.html\" target=\"_blank\">Opus 1.2<\/a> includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speech quality improvements especially in the 12-20 kbit\/s range<\/li>\n<li>Improved VBR encoding for hybrid mode<\/li>\n<li>More aggressive use of wider speech bandwidth, including fullband speech starting at 14 kbit\/s<\/li>\n<li>Music quality improvements in the 32-48 kb\/s range<\/li>\n<li>Generic and SSE CELT optimizations<\/li>\n<li>Support for directly encoding packets up to 120 ms<\/li>\n<li>DTX support for CELT mode<\/li>\n<li>SILK CBR improvements<\/li>\n<li>Support for all of the fixes in draft-ietf-codec-opus-update-06 (the mono downmix and the folding fixes need <code>--enable-update-draft<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Many bug fixes, including integer wrap-arounds discovered through fuzzing (no security implications)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Besides building the codec from source, a <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~jonathonf\/+archive\/ubuntu\/ffmpeg-3\" target=\"_blank\">third-party PPA<\/a> now is available to make it easy to install Opus 1.2 in Ubuntu 16.04 and\/or Ubuntu 14.04.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or by application launcher, when it opens, run command to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf\/ffmpeg-3<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type in your password (no visual feedback due to security reason) when it asks and hit Enter.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ffmpeg-3-ppa-600x92.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"92\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ffmpeg-3-ppa-600x92.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ffmpeg-3-ppa-450x69.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/ffmpeg-3-ppa.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Then upgrade the library and opus-tools via Software Updater:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/opus-1.2-600x430.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"430\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6892\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/opus-1.2-600x430.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/opus-1.2-450x323.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/opus-1.2.jpg 707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or simply run commands in terminal:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get update\r\n\r\nsudo apt-get install libopus0 opus-tools<\/pre>\n<p>NOTE: the PPA contains the latest FFMPEG 3 packages. If you want to install it, the <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~jonathonf\/+archive\/ubuntu\/tesseract\" target=\"_blank\">Tesseract OCR PPA<\/a> is required in Ubuntu 14.04 for the dependencies.<\/p>\n<p>f you don&#8217;t want to upgrade your ffmpeg libraries, remove the PPA via command:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:jonathonf\/ffmpeg-3<\/pre>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Opus audio codec reached the new major 1.2 release a few days ago with many quality improvements, new features, and bug fixes.
