{"id":7080,"date":"2017-08-20T15:35:19","date_gmt":"2017-08-20T15:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/?p=7080"},"modified":"2017-08-20T15:35:19","modified_gmt":"2017-08-20T15:35:19","slug":"gscan2pdf-reached-1-8-5-release-with-enhancements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2017\/08\/gscan2pdf-reached-1-8-5-release-with-enhancements\/","title":{"rendered":"Gscan2pdf reached 1.8.5 release with enhancements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/gscan2pdf-icon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6635\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gscan2pdf, a simple graphical tool to produce PDFs or DjVus from scanned documents, reached the new 1.8.5 release a day ago with some new features.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Five clicks are required to scan several pages and then save all or a selection as a PDF or DjVu file, including metadata if required.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gscan2pdf.sourceforge.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">gscan2pdf<\/a> can control regular or sheet-fed (ADF) scanners with SANE via libimage-sane-perl, scanimage or scanadf, and can scan multiple pages at once. It presents a thumbnail view of scanned pages, and permits simple operations such as cropping, rotating and deleting pages.<\/p>\n<p>OCR can be used to recognise text in the scans, and the output embedded in the PDF or DjVu.<\/p>\n<p>PDF conversion is done by PDF::API2. The resulting document may be saved as a PDF, DjVu, multipage TIFF file, or single page image file.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Changes in gscan2pdf 1.8.5 include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add support for Poppler (pdftops) as postscript backend.<\/li>\n<li>Remove support for libsane-perl<\/li>\n<li>Reapply current scan settings for those scanners that reset them when forcing a reload<\/li>\n<li>Eliminate unnecessary strings from gscan2pdf.pot to prevent unnecessary work and confusion on the part of the translators.<\/li>\n<li>Add A3 to default paper sizes<\/li>\n<li>Translation updates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>How to Install Gscan2pdf 1.8.5 in Ubuntu:<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~jeffreyratcliffe\/+archive\/ubuntu\/ppa\" target=\"_blank\">developer&#8217;s PPA<\/a> offers the latest packages for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, and derivatives.<\/p>\n<p>Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching for &#8220;terminal&#8221; from app launcher.
