Here&#8217;s how to install it in Ubuntu via PPA.<\/p>\n<p>SMPlayer 17.10 following two changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Replace the deprecated video and audio filters in mpv with new ones.<\/li>\n<li>The karaoke filter is available again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Note that due to the first change, Linux users may need to update MPV (see <a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/index.php\/2017\/04\/mpv-player-0-25-released-install-ubuntu-16-04\/\" target=\"_blank\">how to install the latest MPV<\/a>) in order to use SMPlayer 17.10.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A workaround is to turn off all video and audio filters. Another workaround is to switch to <b>mplayer<\/b> by selecting mplayer as multimedia engine in Preferences -> General.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/smplayer-mac-skin-600x362.jpg\" alt=\"SMPlayer with Mac skin\" width=\"600\" height=\"362\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5882\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/smplayer-mac-skin-600x362.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/smplayer-mac-skin-400x241.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/smplayer-mac-skin.jpg 959w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>How to Install SMPlayer 17.10 in Ubuntu via PPA:<\/h4>\n<p>The new release has made into the official PPA, available for Ubuntu 17.10, Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, and their derivatives.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Open terminal and run the following command to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm\/smplayer<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/smplayer-ppa-600x99.jpg\" alt=\"Smplayer PPA\" width=\"600\" height=\"99\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/smplayer-ppa-600x99.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/smplayer-ppa-400x66.jpg 400w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/smplayer-ppa.jpg 728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For those who prefer Qt4 version, use the new PPA instead:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm\/smplayer-qt4<\/pre>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Then you can upgrade SMPlayer from a previous release via <b>Software Updater<\/b> (Update Manager) after checking for updates:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/smplayer-via-update-manager-450x309.jpg\" alt=\"upgrade smplayer\" width=\"450\" height=\"309\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/smplayer-via-update-manager-450x309.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/smplayer-via-update-manager-600x412.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/smplayer-via-update-manager.jpg 728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Or you can run the commands below in terminal to do install or upgrade SMPlayer:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get update \r\n\r\nsudo apt-get install smplayer smtube smplayer-themes<\/pre>\n<p><b>How to Restore:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For any reason, you can easily restore the installation to the stock version via the ppa-purge tool:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:rvm\/smplayer<\/pre>\n<p>For the qt4 ppa, replace <code>ppa:rvm\/smplayer<\/code> with <code>ppa:rvm\/smplayer-qt4<\/code> in the code.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new monthly update of SMPlayer media player was released earlier today.
