Here&#8217;s how you can upgrade from the Ubuntu 17.04 desktop. <\/p>\n<p>Ubuntu 17.10 replaces Unity with Gnome Shell as its default desktop environment. It&#8217;s powered by 4.13 Kernel and runs Gnome on Wayland by default. Xorg is also available for choice.<\/p>\n<p>A fresh install of Ubuntu 17.10 is recommended. But for those who want to upgrade from Ubuntu 17.04, do:<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> First is always backup your important data, bookmarks, and other user documents.<\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Launch <b>Software &#038; Updates<\/b> utility from application launcher,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>in first tab, choose &#8220;Download from&#8221; <b>Main server<\/b><\/li>\n<li>in <b>Other Software<\/b> tab, remove\/disable all third-party repositories.<\/li>\n<li>in <b>Additional Drivers<\/b> tab, choose an open-source driver if a proprietary one is in use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/remove-3party-repo-450x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"266\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/remove-3party-repo-450x266.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/remove-3party-repo-768x453.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/remove-3party-repo-600x354.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/remove-3party-repo.jpg 769w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Remove other desktop environments (KDE, Cinnamon, etc).
