It&#8217;s however easy to install them via a single command.<\/p>\n<p>During the Ubuntu installing process, it provides an option &#8220;<i>Install third party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats<\/i>&#8221; in the wizard. If you didn&#8217;t enable it, Ubuntu refuses to play movie and sound via the default Totem media player and Rhythmbox music player.<\/p>\n<p>Without installing third-party player with bundled codecs, you can simply install the <b>ubuntu-restricted-extras<\/b> package to fix the issue. The package does not contain anything, but tells to install the following packages for you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><code>ttf-mscorefonts-installer<\/code> &#8211; Install Microsoft TrueType core fonts.<\/li>\n<li><code>unrar<\/code> &#8211; non-free package enables ability to extract rar package in Ubuntu.<\/li>\n<li><code>libavcodec-extra<\/code> &#8211; FFmpeg library with encoder \/ decoder for audio and video codecs.<\/li>\n<li><code>chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra<\/code> &#8211; FFmpeg codecs for Chromium based web browser.<\/li>\n<li>And a few gstreamer1.0 plugins for audio \/ video playback, recording and editing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to Install Media Codecs in Ubuntu:<\/h3>\n<p>Firstly, open a terminal window either by searching from the &#8216;<i>Activities<\/i>&#8216; overview screen or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/open-gnometerminal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/open-gnometerminal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"270\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/open-gnometerminal.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/open-gnometerminal-300x135.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When terminal opens, copy and paste the command below into it and hit Enter:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update && sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type your password (no visual feedback for security reason) when it prompts and hit Enter<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/apt-codecs.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/apt-codecs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"292\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/apt-codecs.png 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/apt-codecs-300x146.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Ubuntu flavors, e.g, KUbuntu, and LUbuntu, there are relevant package to install the commonly used media codecs and fonts.<\/p>\n<p>For KUbuntu users, open terminal emulator from start menu and run the command below instead:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update && sudo install kubuntu-restricted-extras<\/pre>\n<p>And for LUbuntu, open terminal from start menu and run the command:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update && sudo install lubuntu-restricted-extras<\/pre>\n<p>That&#8217;s all.
