For <b>Ubuntu 16.04<\/b> users who prefer traditional VLC packages to the snap, here&#8217;s how to install VLC 3.0.2 via a PPA repository.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/vlc-mediaplayer-600x358.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"358\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/vlc-mediaplayer-600x358.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/vlc-mediaplayer-450x268.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/vlc-mediaplayer-768x458.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/vlc-mediaplayer.jpg 941w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE:<\/b> The PPA build does not support Chromecast, upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 if that&#8217;s important to you.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T keyboard shortcuts or by searching for &#8216;terminal&#8217; from app launcher. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/gnome-launch-terminal-450x230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"230\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/gnome-launch-terminal-450x230.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/gnome-launch-terminal.jpg 470w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> When terminal opens, run command to add the third-party VLC PPA:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf\/vlc-3<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type your password (no visual feedback while typing due to security reason) when it prompts and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/vlc3-ppa-600x86.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"86\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7764\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/vlc3-ppa-600x86.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/vlc3-ppa-450x65.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/vlc3-ppa.jpg 746w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Run following 2 commands to add the PPAs for updated FFmpeg and Meson libraries:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf\/ffmpeg-4<\/pre>\n<pre style=\"border:None;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf\/meson<\/pre>\n<p><b>4.<\/b> Finally upgrade VLC media player using <b>Software Updater<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Or run command in terminal to install VLC 3.0.2 in Ubuntu 16.04:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install vlc<\/pre>\n<h4>How to Restore:<\/h4>\n<p>You can revert back to stock version of VLC (2.2.2) in Ubuntu 16.04 by purging the PPA via command:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:jonathonf\/vlc-3<\/pre>\n<p>Also downgrade the FFmpeg libraries by purging the dependency PPA if you want:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo ppa-purge ppa:jonathonf\/ffmpeg-4<\/pre>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest VLC 3.0.2 will soon be available in Ubuntu 18.04 repository (published as proposed at the moment).
