Unlike most free software for creating 3D models (such as Blender) it does not focus on the artistic aspects of 3D modelling but instead on the CAD aspects. Thus it might be the application you are looking for when you are planning to create 3D models of machine parts but pretty sure is not what you are looking for when you are more interested in creating computer-animated movies.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/OpenSCAD-small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"268\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/OpenSCAD-small.jpg 580w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/OpenSCAD-small-300x138.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openscad.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSCAD<\/a> is not available in Ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10 universe repositories due to build failure. Fortunately, the <a href=\"https:\/\/launchpad.net\/~openscad\/+archive\/ubuntu\/releases\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenSCAD releases PPA<\/a> contains the software package for Ubuntu 18.04, which also works in Ubuntu 18.10.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Open terminal either via <b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b> keyboard shortcut or from software launcher. When it opens, paste following command and run to add the PPA:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openscad\/releases<\/pre>\n<p><i>Type user password (no asterisks feedback) when it prompts and hit Enter to continue.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/openscad-ppa-600x95.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"95\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/openscad-ppa-600x95.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/openscad-ppa-450x72.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/openscad-ppa.jpg 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>2. For Ubuntu 18.10<\/b>, open <b>Software &#038; Updates<\/b> and navigate to <b>Other Software<\/b> tab. Then do:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Highlight the openscad repository line.<\/li>\n<li>Click <b>Edit<\/b> button to bring up setup dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Change the value of &#8220;Distribution&#8221; from <code>cosmic<\/code> to <code>bionic<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Save the changes, and close the window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/openscad-bionic-600x359.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"359\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/openscad-bionic-600x359.jpg 600w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/openscad-bionic-450x269.jpg 450w, https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/openscad-bionic.jpg 733w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Finally either install OpenSCAD via Synaptic package manager, or run following 2 commands one by one in terminal:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get update\r\n\r\nsudo apt-get install openscad<\/pre>\n<h4>Uninstall:<\/h4>\n<p>To remove the PPA repository, open <b>Software &#038; Updates -> Other Software<\/b> (see pic. in step2) and simply remove the repository line.<\/p>\n<p>To remove OpenSCAD, run command in terminal:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo apt-get remove --autoremove openscad<\/pre>\n<p>In addition for those feeling OK with Gnome Flatpak (containerized software package), the software is also available in <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/apps\/details\/org.openscad.OpenSCAD\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Flathub<\/a>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This quick tutorial shows you how to install OpenSCAD, the programmers solid 3D CAD modeller, in Ubuntu 18.10, Ubuntu 18.04.
