Also works in Ubuntu 19.04, Ubuntu 19.10 though.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to share a folder in Ubuntu as the default file browser offer a context menu option to bring up the setup wizard.<\/p>\n<p><b>1.)<\/b> First open the default Nautilus file browser, and right-click on a folder you want to share.<\/p>\n<p>In the context menu, click the &#8216;<b>Local Network Share<\/b>&#8216; option.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9517\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/localnetworkshare.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"363\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>2.)<\/b> In the pop-up dialog, check the checkbox says &#8216;Share this folder&#8217; and click the &#8216;Install service&#8217; button when it prompts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9522\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/install-service.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"228\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>3.)<\/b> And confirm by clicking on &#8216;Install&#8217; button to install samba, a free software re-implementation of the SMB networking protocol.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9519\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/install-samba.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"379\" height=\"226\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>4.)<\/b> After installed the services, do following in the &#8216;Folder Sharing&#8217; window:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enable &#8216;Share this folder&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Input a share name.<\/li>\n<li>(Optional) enable <b>write permission<\/b>, <b>guest<\/b> access.<\/li>\n<li>Finally click on &#8216;Create Share&#8217; button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9521\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/setup-sharefolder.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>5.(Optional)<\/b> If you want remote machine to type <code>username<\/code> and <code>password<\/code> before accessing the shared folder, open terminal (<b>Ctrl+Alt+T<\/b>) and run command:<\/p>\n<pre style=\"border:none;\">sudo smbpasswd -a USERNAME<\/pre>\n<p><i>Note:The &#8220;USERNAME&#8221; must be an existing user in your Ubuntu. It&#8217;s <code>handbook<\/code> in my case. And type a password twice for remote smb access only.<\/i> <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/add-user-smb.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"149\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9526\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>To access the shared folder, you first need to get either IP address or hostname.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the hostname (computer name), simply open terminal and run command <code>hostname<\/code><\/li>\n<li>For IP address, go to <b>Settings -&gt; Network<\/b> (or <b>Wi-Fi<\/b> for wireless connection), click on the gear button, and check in the pop-up window.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9523\" src=\"https:\/\/ubuntuhandbook.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ip-wired.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>To get access the shared folder:<\/h4>\n<p>In <b>Ubuntu<\/b>, go to <b>Files -> Other Locations<\/b>.
