How to Install HP Linux Printer Driver in Ubuntu 13.04/13.10

Have a HP printer connected with your Ubuntu machine? Well, here’s how to install HP Linux Printer Driver in Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy, Ubuntu 13.04 Raring, Linux Mint and Elementary OS.

HP Linux Printer Driver (HPLIP) is an HP developed solution for printing, scanning, and faxing with HP inkjet and laser based printers in Linux.

The HPLIP project provides printing support for over 2,080 printer models–including; Deskjet, Officejet, Photosmart, PSC (Print, Scan, Copy), Business Inkjet, LaserJet, Edgeline MFP, and LaserJet MFP.

The latest HPLIP 3.13.9 added Support for the Following New Printers:

  • HP Designjet Z5400 44-in PostScript ePrinter
  • HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 1018 Printer
  • HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 1518 All-in-One Printer
  • HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2540 All-in-One Printer Series
  • HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2545 All-in-One Printer
  • HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2546 All-in-One Printer
  • HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 4515 e-All-in-One Printer
  • HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 4518 e-All-in-One Printer
  • HP Envy 4504 e-All-in-One
  • HP LaserJet Pro MFP M435nw
  • HP Officejet 4630 e-All-in-One
  • HP Officejet 4632 e-All-in-One Printer
  • HP Officejet 4635 e-All-in-One Printer
  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium e-AiO N911n
  • HP Photosmart 5521 e-All-in-One Printer

Download & Install HP Linux Printer Driver

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run below command to download hplip 3.13.9:

cd ~/Downloads && wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/hplip/hplip-3.13.9.run

Or you can check out the latest version on this page.

Once downloaded, execute command to start the installation:

sh ~/Downloads/hplip*.run

Answer the questions and wait for the installing process. It’ll properly install & configure the driver for your printer. When done, you can open the HP device manager from the panel indicator. Enjoy!

      I installed the software as you suggested and I get the HP Icon on my desktop but when I go through the Device Manager, it states NO DEVICE FOUND… What can I do from here?

      following up again, I get device not found and then on the terminal I get the comment

      /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:127: RuntimeWarning: PyOS_InputHook is not available for interactive use of PyGTK
      set_interactive(1)

      I have the same problem, “NO DEVICE FOUND” with USB cable for HP C4480 printer.
      The connection works – I put a memory card in the printer and the computer can read it.

      I note that it says:

      error: ubuntu-13.10 version is not supported, so all dependencies may not be installed. However trying to install using ubuntu-13.04 version packages.

      It managed to find my 1312 network printer, but was unable to communicate with the device. Just kept repeating this and saying “Please check the device and try again.” but the device is working with older driver on my laptop. Seems a bit unstable for use 13.10.

      I am unable to enter my password in the terminal. Therefore the installation cannot be completed. I really am gobsmacked how difficult it is to install a printer.

      Installed Linux Mint 16 Mate. Installed all drivers for printer. When I go into Printers my printer shows up as unknown. I follow the instructions and add my printer. When trying to print a test page nothing happens. Printer is an HP 1050.

      My HP CP1025nw does not print. HP driver not installed! even I tried newer hplip 13.14.4

      Just connected my HP2540 to my laptop running Ubuntu 12.04 (Mate desktop). When I plugged in the USB Ubuntu automatically found the printer and I set it to be the default printer – but it won’t print – the print job appears very briefly in the print queue and then disappears as though printed but with nothing happening.

      Mint 17 – All goes well until hp-setup when I get “unable to locate package package cnijfilter-mg6300series”. I’m stuck as before – the printer is contacted, accepts the job but then just beeps and resets with nothing printed.

      I’ve recently updated hplip to latest version, everything seems to be working s expected.
      Command hp-check finished with ‘No errors or warnings.’

      When I run hp-toolbox to make hplip detect my USB HP LaserJet 1018, in my Ubuntu 13.04 it keeps telling me ‘No devices found’.

      I don’t understand why this is not working, when I had Ubuntu 12.04 it worked well at once, but since I changed to 13.04 I haven’t been able to use my printer.
      Any idea?

      Thanks a lot for your solution.

      in fact even after upgrading hplip, it didnt detect the hp printer automatically. i havd to manually type the USB ID of the device. and after that it worked like a charm.

      I have tried this and my hp 8600 series printer shows as the default printer and when told to print it says it sends to it but it never prints. I can print from my other devices and computers.

      hello ,

      have an error for installing HP DESKTOP 2514 ,
      when i try to install with new printer on ubuntu , it only fiind a 2510, then when i want to print ….nothing !!!
      so i have try to install the version v3.13.9 with the software center but have an error too.
      PACKAGES DEPENDENCIES CANNOT BE RESOLVED .

      I have an HP 8600 N911n. I installed via command line “sudo apt-get install -y hplip” … printer works. i then had to go to ubuntu software center to install the HP toolbox. My question is how do I install the HP toolbox via command line?
