After 3 months of development, Apache NetBeans announced the new 26 release today.

The new release updated its UI with better HiDPI support. It now displays the dragged tab image and ensures to render SVG icons at full resolution on HiDPI screens. And, there are 150 more icons updated from GIF/PNG to SVG to look good on HiDPI/Retina screens.

apt, the default command line package manager for Debian and Ubuntu based Linux Distributions, released new version 3.1.0 on Monday.

As you may know, apt 3.0 introduced new package dependency resolver with more efficient and clean output. Now, the resolver 3 is enabled by default in the new 3.1 release.

For those who need to compare files, folders, and version controlled projects regularly, Debian and Ubuntu are adding back the nautilus-compare extension for GNOME Files (aka Nautilus) in default repositories for current development releases.

nautilus-compare is a Nautilus extension that adds “compare” option to right-click menu of selected files/folders, allowing to quickly launch Meld tool, and view, edit, and merge the differences graphically.

GIMP 3.0.4, the second update for the major 3.0 release series of this popular image editor, is out!

The official release note is not ready at the moment of writing, though it should be available in next few days. According to the NEWS file in source code, GIMP 3.0.4 features bug-fixes, tools/plug-ins updates, and various improvements.

For users of Ubuntu 24.10 Oracular Oriole, the upgrade channel to the latest Ubuntu 25.04 reopened after fixed some critical bugs.

Ubuntu 25.04, code-name Plucky Puffin, was released in last month as the latest short term Ubuntu release. The upgrade channel opened just after the release date. It however had some critical issues.

The cross-platform free open source motor-sport simulator, Speed Dreams, released new 2.4.1 version a few days ago.

Speed Dreams is a fork of the famous Open Racing Car Simulator TORCS, and it features high-quality 3D graphics and an accurate physics engine. The last 2.4.0 release introduced a in-game download manager, allowing to easily fetch new cars and tracks from a configurable repositories.

Visual Studio Code 1.100, the April 2025 release of Microsoft’s IDE, was released one day ago on May 8.

The new version now uses GPT-4.1 as the default base model in AI chat, though it’s a progressive roll-out feature that may not yet be available to all users.

It implemented support for OpenAI’s apply patch editing format (GPT 4.1 and o4-mini) and Anthropic’s replace string tool (Claude Sonnet 3.7 and 3.5), that results significantly faster edits, especially in large files.

The developer team started the development of Ubuntu 25.10 in last week. Now the release schedule and daily build live CD image are out!

Ubuntu 25.10, code-name Questing Quokka, is the next Ubuntu version planned to be released on October 09. It’s a short term release with 9-month support circle.

If everything goes well, it will feature GNOME 49 desktop and the latest Linux Kernel (probably v6.17 according to Kernel release interval).
