digiKam 4.14.0, the last stable release of the 4.x series, has been released. The next 5.0.0 release with Qt5 and KF5 support is on the way.

In this release, OpenCV 3.x is now supported for face management and others tools based on OpenCV algorithm. Some work have been done about overlay icon to improve usability. Icons are now re-sized accordingly with thumbnail sizes, and a new icon have been add to quickly run slideshow in full-screen mode.

How to install / upgrade digikam in Ubuntu:

Open terminal from the Application Launcher or via Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key. When it opens, run below commands one by one to get the latest digiKam from Philip Johnsson’s PPA.

1. Choose a PPA to add to your system.

For Ubuntu 14.04 with Kubuntu Backports PPA added, run command to add PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/kubuntu-backports

For Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 15.04 with default KDE libraries, use below command instead:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/extra 

2. Update system repository cache and install/upgrade digiKam:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install digikam

digiKam Software Collection 4.12.0 has been released recently with a huge bugs fixed. KDE Frameworks 5 port is planed to be completed before end of this year.

Philip Johnsson is maintaining PPAs with latest digiKam packages for current Ubuntu releases (e.g., Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 15.04). It’s easy to install or upgrade the software in supported Ubuntu releases via below steps:

1. For (K)Ubuntu 15.04 and (K)Ubuntu 14.04 with default KDE, open terminal emulator from app launcher and run below command to add PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/extra

2. For (K)Ubuntu 14.04 who has upgrade to KDE 4.14 via Kubuntu Backports PPA, add another PPA instead:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/kubuntu-backports

3. After adding one of previous PPAs, upgrade digiKam through your package manager after reload system cache. Or run below commands one by one in terminal:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install digikam

4. (Optional) To downgrade digiKam to the default version available in system repository, install ppa-purge and purge the PPA:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:philip5/extra

DigiKam 4.5.0 Available in PPA for Ubuntu 14.10

The digiKam Team recently announced the 4.5.0 release of digiKam Software Collection with bug fixes and new optional dependencies for supporting Kipi plug-ins, face management, and geo-location maps.

“The digiKam Team is proud to announce the release of digiKam Software Collection 4.5.0. This release includes bugs fixes and switch as optional some dependencies as libkipi, libkface, libkgeomap dedicated respectively to support Kipi plugins, Face management, and Geo-location maps. By this way we will be able to port digiKam to KF5/Qt5 step by step.”

Install / Upgrade to digiKam 4.5.0:

Thanks to Philip Johnsson, the 4.5.0 release has been made into PPA, but only available for Ubuntu 14.10 and derivatives.

To add the PPA, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, paste the command below and hit enter to run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/extra

After that, you can upgrade digiKam by running “Software Updater”. Or just install it via the commands below:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install digikam

(Optional) To revert to previous version, install ppa-purge and purge the PPA via:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

sudo ppa-purge ppa:philip5/extra

digiKam 4.3.0 is out! Install it in (K)Ubuntu 14.04

digiKam, an advanced digital photo management application for KDE, now is at version 4.3.0. The new release brings three new features and 144 bug fixes.

The new release includes some new features:

  • New option to display all non geo-located images from collections.
  • New notification event when kio-slave cannot be started. OSX event notifier is now used to dispatch notifications under Mac.
  • New action to exclude items without rating with items filter

Install digiKam 4.3 in Ubuntu 14.04:

Thanks to Philip Johnsson, the guy has built the latest packages into PPA, available for both (K)Ubuntu 14.04 KDE 4.13 (default version) and KDE 4.14 (upgrade through Kubuntu Backports PPA).

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, do:

1. For those who have upgrade to KDE 4.14.x through Kubuntu Team’s backports PPA, run below command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/kubuntu-backports

For those who are using the default KDE version (4.13), run below command instead:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/extra

2. After added PPA, run update and install or upgrade digiKam:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install digikam

digiKam 4.2.0 Released, Install it in Ubuntu 14.04

digiKam, open-source image organizer and tag editor, has reached version 4.2.0 one days ago on August 5th. The developer team announced in the website:

Install / Upgrade to digiKam 4.2 in Ubuntu 14.04:

Besides building from the source tarball, you can upgrade digiKam through this third-party PPA.

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the commands below one by one to add the PPA and install or upgrade digiKam in Ubuntu 14.04:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/extra

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install digikam

If you’ve upgrade to KDE 4.14 through Kubuntu Backports PPA, run below commands instead to avoid dependencies issue.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/kubuntu-backports

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install digikam

digiKam team has announced the release of digiKam Software Collection 4.1.0 one week ago, with many fixes since the stable v4.0.0. According to the announcement, the new release contains below changes:

  • A huge hack about face management feature have been processed. Some conditions introducing are now closed. Implementations in shared library libkface dedicated to detect and recognize faces are now more robust and suitable for production.
  • A new overlay have been add to all icon-view to indicate if items has geo-location information. This will help end users to find quickly in album which items use GPS coordinates.
  • Thumbnails now support large resolution monitor. Thumbs size can be expended to 512 instead 256 previously.

Install / Upgrade to digiKam 4.1.0:

digiKam 4.1.0 depends on the latest opencv 2.4.9 which is not yet available in Ubuntu repository. Fortunately, a third-party PPA, maintained by Philip Johnsson has built them for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty LTS.

To add the PPA and install digiKam 4.1.0, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run commands below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:philip5/extra

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install digikam

The digiKam team finally announced the release of digiKam 4.0.0, the open-source photo management software. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty via PPA.

According to the release note, the new release include many new features introduced by completed GSoC 2013 projects:

  • A new tool dedicated to organize whole tag hierarchies. This new feature is relevant of GoSC-2013 project from Veaceslav Munteanu. Veaceslav has also implemented multiple selection and multiple drag-n-drop capabilities on Tags Manager and Tags View from sidebars, and the support for writing face rectangles metadata in Windows Live Photo format.
  • A new maintenance tool dedicated to parse image quality and auto-tags items automatically using Pick Labels. This tool is relevant to another GoSC-2013 project from Gowtham Ashok.
  • Showfoto thumbbar is now ported to Qt model/view in order to switch later full digiKam code to Qt5. This project is relevant to another GoSC-2013 project from Mohamed Anwer.
  • A lots of work have been done into Import tool to fix several dysfunctions reported since a very long time. For example, The status to indicate which item have been already downloaded from the device is back. Thanks to Teemu Rytilahti and Islam Wazery to contribute. All fixes are not yet completed and the game continue until the next beta release.
  • This release is now fully ported to Qt4 model-view and drop last Q3-Support classes. The last pending part was Image Editor Canvas ported and completed by Yiou Wang through this GoSC-2013 project. In the future, port to Qt5 will be easy and quickly done, when KDE 5 API will stabilized and released.
  • This release include also the multi-core CPU support for severals tools which require a lots of computing, as Sharpen, LocalContrast, Noise Reduction, and all visual effects tools.

Install digiKam 4.0 in Ubuntu 14.04:

Besides building the app from source, you can install it from a third party Kubuntu PPA in Trusty by running the commands below one by one in terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

sudo apt-get update

Install digiKam 4.0 Beta3 in Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy

The photo management software digiKam 4.0.0 has reached its third beta release just a few hours ago. There will be also beta4 and RC releases, and the digiKam 4.0.0 final will be released on May 11.

According to the release notes, following new features will be added in this version:

  • A new tool dedicated to organize whole tag hierarchies. This new feature is relevant of GoSC-2013 project from Veaceslav Munteanu. This project include also a back of Nepomuk support in digiKam broken since a while due to important KDE API changes. Veaceslav has also implemented multiple selection and multiple drag-n-drop capabilities on Tags Manager and Tags View from sidebars, and the support for writing face rectangles metadata in Windows Live Photo format.
  • A new maintenance tool dedicated to parse image quality and auto-tags items automatically using Pick Labels. This tool is relevant to anotherGoSC-2013 project from Gowtham Ashok. This tool require feedback and hack to be finalized for this release.

    Press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open a terminal window. When it opens, run the commands below to add the digiKam Beta repository:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:msylwester/digikam-beta

    There’s also a stable PPA created by the maintainer. It will provide the digiKam 4.0.0 final build for Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy and Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty. To add this PPA, run:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:msylwester/digikam

    After adding the PPA, run the commands below to update package lists and install digiKam:

    sudo apt-get update 
    
    sudo apt-get install digikam

    Since last digiKam 3.4.0 was released with a new core implementation to speed up processing, digiKam team just announced v3.5.0 with following bug fixes:

    • Kipi-plugins cannot be deselected or Digikam not reading digikamrc
    • Panorama creation: give first and last (used) file name automatically
    • Removing tags limited to 250 selected pictures
    • undo/redo does not take effect in the image
    • Feature request: Setting in digiKam to only detect faces, not trying to recognize them automatically
    • Digikam crashed when validating face tag with button

    Download & Build digiKam in Ubuntu:

    digiKam software collection tarball can be downloaded from KDE repository. So far, the Kubuntu Backports PPA is still stuck with v3.3.0. Fortunately, it’s not hard to compile and install from the source.

    UPDATE: There’s now a PPA that contains digiKam 3.5.0 for Ubuntu 13.10. Just run commands below one by one to add PPA and install digiKam 3.5::

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:msylwester/digikam
    
    sudo apt-get update
    
    sudo apt-get install digikam
    
    sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:msylwester/digikam

    I’ve successfully built digiKam 3.5.0 on Ubuntu 13.10 Beta2, see what I did in steps below:

    1. Press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run command to install required tools:

    sudo apt-get install gcc cpp make cmake checkinstall

    2. Click the previous link to download the source tarball. Then navigate to downloaded directory in command line and uncompress the package:

    cd ~/Downloads; tar jxvf digikam-3.5.0.tar.bz2

    Go to resulted folder and create build directory:

    cd ~/Downloads/digikam-3.5.0/
    mkdir build
    cd build

    3. Install the dependencies:

    sudo apt-get install libgpod4-nogtk 
    sudo apt-get build-dep digikam kipi-plugins

    4. Check if all requirements for compile are available:

    cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=release -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` ..

    5. If ready, compile it via:

    sudo checkinstall --pkgname=digiKam3.5 --install=no  make install

    6. Follow the on screen prompts and install the result DEB:

    sudo dpkg -i digikam3.5*.deb
