Clementine OS – The Continuation of Pear Linux OS

Last updated: June 10, 2014

Hello dear readers. As you may know, Pear Linux OS, the Ubuntu based distribution that mimics Apple’s OS X completely, is discontinued because the developer David Tavares has sold this distribution to an undisclosed company that will develop the Linux-based operating system for its own products.

All the download links have been removed from the official website, which is no longer active. Fortunately, a new team will continue the Pear OS by developing a new OS called Clementine OS.

Clementine OS 10.8 will start development in April of 2014 based on the upcoming Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. The official website is out and now provides iso images for Pear OS 8.

UPDATE 1: The developer received a letter from an American company that forced him to abandon the project. He later said that it was not Apple, but another major company. He could not disclose its name, however.

UPDATE: I found that the website is down after I spread this news around. If you’re interested in this OS, you can follow the developer on Google +

  1. Great news! but the website is wrong (or seems like it’s wrong). Hope we have news on DistroWatch soon.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. The site is no longer active. Could be hoax.

  3. Website seems to be up and running, looking good!

    • Nope, once it’s alive, once it’s dead, looks more like an unprofessionnal hoax or bad joke… But not a serious team.

The guy who started Klementine OS had a slight legal brush, and he’s still developing, but is making sure he isn’t making any copyright holders unhappy.

The guy running it Brendan, wanted to continue PearOS, he received a lawyer letter from “An American Company” “Not Apple”. “Clementine” became “Klementine” because of a letter from the music player guys.

The legal issue was using some PearOS stuff that was copyrighted on the download stuff. It sounds like it wasn’t really a ‘shut down your project’ so much as ‘stop using PearOS copyrighted stuff in your fork. Brendan is still developing it privately, and making a bunch of changes anyway.

So his fork isn’t dead, it’s just gone private until it’s not going to be a legal problem.

It sounds to me like it was all pretty polite, and it’ll be back.

  5. I am disappointed. I do not sure a Linux distro as good as Pear. Hope Clementine be!

  6. Just finish it of your heart and we will support it for ever.

  7. The Google plus links are showing a 404.

Do you really think everything is fine?

What happend was that the maker of Pear OS . did not keep to the linux rules and copied a code from another developer and never called his name..

I think it will not be long before that other Fruit company closes the minty fruit down!

Thanks to Innocent Bystander for the updated link – hope it won’t be long – Pear was always solid.

  10. Hmmmmm, it is not hard to turn any linux using xfce into a osx clone with major improvements.
