How to Install Sopcast Player in Ubuntu 18.04

Last updated: April 22, 2018

This quick tutorial is going to show you how to install Sopcast Player in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

SopCast Player is designed to be an easy to use Linux GUI front-end for the p2p streaming technology developed by SopCast.

There are a few PPAs contain the Sopcast player packages. Although there’s no Ubuntu 18.04 package available at the moment, you can install the .deb for Ubuntu 17.10 as a workaround.

1. Download and install the dependency package sp-auth:

For beginners, it’s recommended to install Gdebi package installer from Ubuntu Software, then install .deb packages with Gdebi.

2. Then download and install the sopcast player package built for Ubuntu 17.10:

Once installed, launch the software from your application launcher.

I can’t get access to any sopcast channels due to the Great Firewall, so I’m not sure if video streaming works.

For those who want to install SopCast Player, a Linux GUI front-end for the p2p streaming technology developed by SopCast, here’s a PPA with sopcast-player 0.8.5 for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 16.10, Linux Mint 18, and derivatives.

Open terminal from Unity Dash, App Launcher, or via Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut keys. When it opens, run following commands one by one:

1. Run command to add the PPA repository:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linuxthebest.net/sopcast

Type in your password (no visual feedback) when it prompts and hit Enter.

2. Then install sopcast-player package either via Synaptic Package Manager or by running commands in terminal:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install sopcast-player

3. Remove the PPA repository afterwards, since the player is not updated any more.

sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:linuxthebest.net/sopcast

For those who don’t want to add PPA, manually grab the DEB packages here.

How to Install SopCast Player in Ubuntu 15.04

Last updated: July 21, 2015

Quick tutorial shows how to install SopCast Player, GUI for SopCast p2p TV streaming, in Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid using PPA.

SopCast Player is designed to be an easy to use Linux GUI front-end for the p2p streaming technology developed by SopCast. It features an integrated video player (VLC), a channel guide, and bookmarks. Once SopCast Player is installed it simply “just works” with no required configuration.

Install SopCast Player in Ubuntu:

There’s a PPA repository available for Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 10.04 and their derivatives (e.g., Mint 13/17, and Elementary OS Freya).

1. To add the PPA, open terminal from the Dash, Launcher, or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T. When it opens, run command:

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:lyc256/sopcast-player

2. After that, you can install the player either from Synaptic Package Manager after clicking Reload button or by running below commands one by one:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install sopcast-player

For those who don’t want to add PPA, download and install the .deb packages of sp-auth and then sopcast-player for your OS from this page.

One of my readers was asking how to install Sopcast Player in Ubuntu 14.04. But Sopcast is not available at any PPA for Ubuntu 14.04 at the moment and it’s not easy to build it from source for normal users. So here’s how to install this good alternative TV-MAXE.

TV-MAXE is an application which provides the ability to watch TV stations and listen radio via different streams, such is SopCast. Currently it has a large number of channels, both romanian and international.

Install TV-Maxe in Ubuntu 14.04:

Because the official PPA provides the latest packages for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 12.10, and Ubuntu 12.04, you can easily install the app by running below commands in terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:venerix/pkg

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install tv-maxe

That’s it. Enjoy!
