uGet download manager 2.2.2 was released a few days ago. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 18.10, and Ubuntu 19.04.

It has been one year and two months since the last release, though version 2.2.2 is a small release with following changes:

  • use quicksort to sort downloads.
  • backup torrent and metalink files.
  • curl plug-in: handle duplicate files with double extensions.

How to Install uGet 2.2.2 in Ubuntu:

The new release package has been made into uGet Stable PPA, available for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 18.10, and Ubuntu 19.04.

1. Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or from app launcher, and then run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:plushuang-tw/uget-stable

Type user password (no asterisk feedback while typing) when it prompts and hit Enter.

2. Then upgrade the download manager from an existing release via Software Updater:

or you can run following 2 commands to check updates and install / upgrade uGet:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install uget

How to Remove:

Run following command in terminal will remove the PPA and also downgrade to the stock version of uGet in your Ubuntu system:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:plushuang-tw/uget-stable

If you want to remove uGet download manager, simply search for and remove it via “Ubuntu Software” utility.

uGet download manager reached the 2.2.1 release a few days ago with less memory usage and some bug-fixes.

uGet 2.2.1 was released silently in its project page with following changes:

  • reduce memory usage.
  • mega plug-in: completed size should not be ‘-1’ if file size > 2G on a 32-bit system.
  • adjust speed limit independently without enabling global speed limit.
  • fix that can’t get 1080p video from YouTube.
  • update translation files.

How to Install uGet 2.2.1 in Ubuntu:

There’s no announcement and official PPA updates at the moment of writing.

However, the .deb packages for Ubuntu 14.04 trusty, Ubuntu 16.04 xenial, Ubuntu 17.10 artful, and Ubuntu 18.04 bionic are available at:

Download the .deb that matches your Ubuntu edition, and click install it via Ubuntu Software, Gdebi, or by running command in terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T):

sudo dpkg -i ~/Downloads/uget_*.deb; sudo apt-get -f install

Once installed, open the download manager from your application launcher and enjoy!

For Google Chrome users not satisfied with the built-in download manager, here’s how to integrate the uGet download manager with Chrome browser in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 14.04, and Linux Mint 17, 18.

uGet used to have an official extension for Chrome/Chromium, though it’s out of date because Google removed NPAPI support.

Now there’s an open-source uGet Chrome Wrapper that integrates uGet Download Manager with Google Chrome in Linux Systems. With it, youcan:

  • Simply click on any download links, ‘uGet new Download’ dialog will appear and continue the download.
  • Right-click on a link and there’s ‘Download with uGet’ option.
  • Press and hold Insert key to prevent uGet from interrupting your download.
  • Use Ctrl+Shift+U to disable or re-enable the extension (uGet Download option in context menu still available).

How to Install uGet Chrome Wrapper in Ubuntu:

1. First in Chrome browser, install the uGet integration extension by going to the link below:

2. Then open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run commands below one by one to install the wrapper for uGet from the developer’s PPA:

  • Add the PPA repository:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:slgobinath/uget-chrome-wrapper

  • Then update and install the wrapper:
    sudo apt update

    sudo apt install uget-chrome-wrapper

Finally restart Google Chrome browser and enjoy!

Uninstall uGet Chrome Wrapper:

To completely remove this stuff, first go to Chrome Settings -> Extensions -> remove “uGet integration” extension.

Then open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and remove the wrapper via command:

sudo apt remove uget-chrome-wrapper && sudo apt autoremove

And the PPA can be removed by going to System Settings -> Software & Updates -> Other Software tab.
