MKVToolNix 30.0.0 Released with W64 Support

MKVToolNix 30.0.0 was released today with new features, enhancements, and bug-fixes.

MKVToolNix 30.0.0 release highlights:

  • mkvextract now writes W64 files for .w64 file or file size > 4 GB
  • Add button to show the 10 most recently used output directories.
  • Predefined split sizes and durations can now be customized in the preferences.
  • Add option to append chapters from an existing file to the current open editor tab.
  • Add new context menu action to copy selected entry to another open editor tab.

How to Install MKVToolNix 30.0.0 in Ubuntu:

The latest MKVToolNix packages will be soon made into its official apt repository for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Linux Mint 19/18, and higher

Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching it from app launcher. When it opens, do following steps:

1. Run command to add the repository:

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb https://mkvtoolnix.download/ubuntu/ $(lsb_release -sc) main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/bunkus.org.list'

Replace $(lsb_release -sc) with bionic for Linux Mint 19, or xenial for Linux Mint 18.x. And input your password (no asterisks while typing) when it prompts and hit Enter.

2. Then install the key:

3. Finally either upgrade the software via Software Updater (Update Manager):

MKVToolNix 26.0.0 Released, How to Install it in Ubuntu

MKVToolNix 26.0.0, free and open-source Matroska software, was released a day ago with new features, enhancements, and various bug-fixes.

MKVToolNix 26.0.0 release highlights:

  • mkvmerge: chapter generation: if the name template given by
    --generate-chapters-name-template is empty, no names (ChapterDisplay
    master elements with ChapterString/ChapterLanguage children) will be
    generated for the chapter atoms.
  • mkvmerge: chapters: chapter names generated from MPLS files will now use the
    name template if one is set via --generate-chapters-name-template.
  • mkvmerge: mkvmerge will no longer abort with an error message if no audio,
    video and subtitle tracks should be multiplexed. This allows copying of
    chapters from non-chapter source files (e.g. Matroska or MP4 files).
  • MKVToolNix GUI: the font size in the tool selector on the left will scale
    with the font size the user selects in the preferences.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: the GUI will no longer automatically resize the columns in
    tree and list views to match the content size. Instead it remembers and
    restores the widths set by the user.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: multiplexer: the chapter name template will now be set
    automatically to the name template in the preferences’ “chapter editor”
    section. Additionally the option --generate-chapters-name-template … will
    be passed to mkvmerge in situations when mkvmerge will generate chapters
    (either because automatic generation is enabled or if chapters are generated
    for MPLS playlists).
  • MKVToolNix GUI: chapter editor: if the chapter name template is empty,
    chapters will be generated without names.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: chapter editor: added an option to remove all chapter names
    to the “additional modifications” dialog.

MKVToolNix 21.0.0 Released, mkvinfo’s GUI Portion Removed

Free and open-source Matroska software MKVToolNix v21.0.0 was released days ago. The biggest change is that mkvinfo’s GUI portion has been removed.

New features and enhancements in MKVToolNix 21.0.0:

  • mkvmerge: track statistics tags: the TagDefault element will not be written anymore as it was always set to the default value 1 anyway.
  • mkvmerge, MKVToolNix GUI: JSON files can now contain C++-style line comments outside of strings (e.g. something like this: // this is ignored). Such comments, even though not part of the official JSON specifications, are now ignored when reading JSON files.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: chapter editor: opening a Matroska file without chapters in it will now open the file in an empty chapter editor instead of showing an error message.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: an “info” tool has been added, replacing the functionality of mkvinfo’s GUI. The functionality is not on par yet but will be for release v22.

MKVToolNix 20.0.0 Released with mkvinfo Rewritten

MKVToolNix, free and open-source Matroska software, reached 20.0.0 release a day ago. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.10.

MKVToolNix 20.0.0 fixed quite a number of bugs in mkvmerge, and removed those options and features deprecated a year ago. An important change was the near complete rewrite of mkvinfo’s internals.

Important notes in the announcement:

  • Feature removal: several deprecated features have been removed:
    • mkvmerge: the deprecated options --identify-verbose (and its counterpart -I), --identify-for-gui, --identify-for-mmg and --identification-format verbose-text
    • support for the deprecated, old, proprietary format used for option files
    • support for passing command line options via the deprecated environment variables MKVTOOLNIX_OPTIONS, MKVEXTRACT_OPTIONS, MKVINFO_OPTIONS, MKVMERGE_OPTIONS and MKVPROPEDIT_OPTIONS
  • mkvinfo: most of its code was re-written in order to lay the groundwork for including its functionality in MKVToolNix GUI but with more features than the existing mkvinfo GUI. Changes include but aren’t limited to:
    • Several element names are a bit clearer (e.g. Maximum cache instead of MaxCache).
    • All timestamps and durations are now output as nanoseconds in formatted form (e.g. 01:23:45.67890123). All additional formats (e.g. floating point numbers output in seconds or milliseconds) were removed.
    • Element names for chapters and tags are now translated if a translation is available.
    • Elements located in wrong positions within the Matroska document are handled better.

MKVToolNix 19.0.0 “Brave Captain” was released a few days ago. The source code repository, bug tracker and wiki have been moved to GitLab.

MKVToolNix 19.0.0 release highlights:

  • mkvmerge will now consider the first key frame within 1ms of the requested value to be eligible for splitting.
  • the GUI will now save and restore the widths of columns in tree and list views.
  • when closing or reloading a modified file, the GUI will now focus the first element that’s been modified before asking the user for confirmation regarding discarding unsaved changes.

Install MKVToolNix 15.0.0 Easily via Snap in Ubuntu

MKVToolNix now is available as Snap app. You can now run the latest 15.0.0 in all current Ubuntu releases, including Ubuntu 14.04, while the official MKVToolNix apt repository only provides packages for Ubuntu 16.04 and higher.

Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching for “terminal” from your application launcher. When it opens, simply run command:

sudo snap install mkvtoolnix-jz

Input your password (no visual feedback while typing) when it prompts and hit Enter.

The snap includes almost all required dependency libraries. Once you installed it, launch the software from your application launcher and enjoy.

For Ubuntu 14.04, you may first install the snapd daemon while it’s not installed by default:

sudo apt-get install snapd snapd-xdg-open

The snap application can co-exist with the traditional packages. If you installed both version of MKVToolNix, and can’t find out which is the snap app from your application launcher, launch the tools via command in terminal:

/snap/bin/mkvtoolnix-jz.gui

Uninstall MKVToolNix snap:

To remove the snap package of MKVToolNix, run following command in terminal:

MKVToolNix Reached 15.0.0 Release, How to Install it in Ubuntu

MKVToolNix, a set of Matroska tools for Windows and Linux, has now reached the 15.0.0 release with improved support for new track header elements and a couple of bug-fixes.

MKVToolNix 15.0.0 release highlights:

  • Add “Set destination file name from selected file’s name” option to the “source files” context menu for multiplex tool.
  • Add “Only use the first source file that contains a video track” option in the preferences on “Multiplexer” → “Output”.
  • Ctrl+Up/Down keys to move up/down selected jobs

MKVToolNix 12.0.0 Released with Important Bug Fix [How-to Install]

MKVToolNix 12.0.0 was released a few days ago. It features one rather important bug fix in the HEVC/h.265 code that can result in invalid files. All users are recommended to upgrade.

MKVToolNix 12.0.0 new features:

  • Ctrl+Shift+Space now toggle the selection of the current item in all tree views (multiple selections are allowed).
  • chapter editor: added the extension `*.cue` (for cue sheet files) to the “open chapter file” dialog.
  • When the CUE sheet includes a global title, it will be automatically used for the title tag when the --title option is empty
  • added an option `–no-date` that prevents the “date” field from being written to the segment information headers.
  • header editor: added support for editing the “date” segment information field.
  • Various bug fixes. See the release note.

How to Install MKVToolNix 12.0.0 in Ubuntu:

MKVToolNix 10.0.0 Released! How to Install it in Ubuntu

MKVToolNix has reached the new major 10.0.0 series with H.264 and H.265 parsers improvements. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.10, and their derivatives.

MKVToolNix 10.0.0 changelog:

  • mkvmerge: AVC/h.264 parser: mkvmerge will now drop all frames before the first key frame as they cannot be decoded properly anyway.
  • mkvmerge: HEVC/h.265 parser: mkvmerge will now drop all frames before the first key frame as they cannot be decoded properly anyway.
  • mkvmerge: HEVC/h.265 parser: added a workaround for invalid values for the “default display window” in the VUI parameters of sequence parameter sets.
  • mkvmerge: MP4 reader: fixed track offsets being wrong in certain situations regarding the presence or absence of edit lists (‘elst’ atoms) & composition timestamps (‘ctts’ atoms).
  • mkvmerge: MP4 reader: offsets in “ctts” are now always treated as signed integers, even with version 0 atoms.
  • mkvinfo: the timestamps of SimpleBlocks with negative timestamps are now shown correctly.
  • mkvmerge: Matroska reader: fixed handling BlockGroups and SimpleBlocks with negative timestamps.
  • mkvmerge: MP3 packetizer: the MP3 packetizer will no longer drop timestamps from source containers if they go backwards. This keeps A/V in sync for files where the source was in sync even though their timestamps aren’t monotonic increasing.
  • mkvmerge: AVC/h.264 parser: mkvmerge will now drop timestamps from the source container if no frame is emitted for that timestamp.
  • mkvmerge: HEVC/h.265 parser: mkvmerge will now drop timestamps from the source container if no frame is emitted for that timestamp. Fixes the HEVC equivalent of the problem with AVC described in #1908.
  • mkvextract: SSA/ASS: fixed extraction when the “Format” line in the “[Events]” section contains less fields than the default for SSA/ASS would indicate.

How to Install MKVToolNix 10.0.0 in Ubuntu / Linux Mint:

1. Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching “terminal” from start menu. When it opens, run command to add MKVToolNix Linux repository:

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://mkvtoolnix.download/ubuntu/ $(lsb_release -sc) main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/bunkus.org.list'

Type in your password (no visual feedback due to security reason) and hit Enter. For Linux Mint 18, replace $(lsb_release -sc) in the code with xenial.

2. Then install the GPG key via command:

wget -q -O - https://mkvtoolnix.download/gpg-pub-moritzbunkus.txt | sudo apt-key add -

3. Finally upgrade MKVToolNix via Software Updater if you have a previous release installed.
