Audacious music player

The Audacious audio player 4.2 was released a few days ago. Here’s PPA with the deb binary packages for Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 22.04, Linux Mint 20, and derivatives.

Following the lead of Debian and Fedora, the new release now features dual Qt5 + GTK2 build by default. And it offers an option in the Settings to make it easy to switch between Qt and classic GTK interfaces.

Audacious has been updated to version 4.2, feature new dark mode support and Flat icon set in both light and dark mode.

Other changes include:

  • Add partial support for Ogg FLAC streams
  • Automatically set the title of an imported playlist based on the filename
  • Preselect the filename of an imported playlist when exporting it again
  • Add a Jump to Song dialog to the Winamp interface in Qt mode
  • Add formatter syntax to allow truncating title strings

Install Audacious 4.2 via PPA in Ubuntu:

The new release package has been made into the Ubuntu PPA. Due to a compile issue and lack of time for debugging, Ubuntu 16.04 build is excluded.

1. Open terminal by either pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard or searching for ‘terminal’ from application menu. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

Type your password (no asterisk feedback) when it prompts and hit Enter to continue.

2. Then run commands one by one in terminal to install or upgrade the audio player:

sudo apt update

sudo apt install audacious audacious-plugins

NOTE: If you got problem installing / updating the audio player, remove the old packages first by running the command in the bottom.

Uninstall:

You can easily remove the PPA either by going to Software & Updates utility -> Other Software tab, or by running command:

sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

To remove audacious, either use your system package manager or run command:

sudo apt remove --autoremove audacious audacious-plugins audacious-dev

Audacious music player 4.0.5 was released a day ago with some important bug-fixes. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 19.10, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 16.04, and derivatives.

Audacious 4.0.5 release highlights:

  • Fixed UI freeze when asterisk key (Shift+8) was pressed.
  • Fixed an exception when reading a large APE (> 1M) tag
  • Fixed album artist not being displayed for .m4a files
  • Fixed a crash on exit with a plugin settings window open
  • Fixed a crash when scrobbling with curl 7.71.0
  • Changed the default CDDB server to gnudb.org

How to Install Audacious 4.0.5 in Ubuntu:

All users of current Ubuntu releases and Linux Mint 18.x, 19.x, 20 can install the new release via Ubuntu PPA by running following commands one by one.

1. Open terminal by either pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard or searching for ‘terminal’ from application menu. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

Audacious music player 4.0.4 was released 2 days ago with further improvements to the new Qt5 UI. Ubuntu PPA updated for all current Ubuntu releases.

Changes in the Qt interface include:

  • Add keyboard shortcuts for Open/Add Folder
  • Fix files being moved instead of copied when dragged to a file manager

For the Qt Winamp interface, some old features are added back:

  • Enable window snapping to screen edges
  • dragging files from file manager

The second bug-fix release for Audacious 4.0 was released a day ago. Here’s how to install it in all current Ubuntu releases.

While the first bug-fix release brings KDE Plasma 5.18 compatibility, Audacious audio player 4.0.2 includes mainly bug fixes and tweaks for the Qt interface:

  • Fixed a regression where the Enter key did not work in the playlist.
  • Fixed the seek bar changing width as the time counter increments.
  • Fixed the title bar getting stuck showing “Buffering”.
  • Added a workaround to ensure that the toolbar is not hidden on startup.
  • Fixed the Composer field not being saved when updating ID3v2 tags.

Audacious audio player 4.0 was finally announced as the new stable release. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.10, and Ubuntu 20.04.

Audacious 4.0 switches to Qt 5 UI by default, though GTK2 is still available as a build option. New features in the release include:

  • New option to hide playlist tabs.
  • New OpenMPT-based tracker module plugin
  • New VU Meter visualization plugin
  • Added option to use a SOCKS network proxy
  • New “Next Album” and “Previous Album” commands
  • The tag editor in Qt UI can now edit multiple files at once
  • Implemented equalizer presets window for Qt UI

Audacious audio player released version 3.10.1 today with some important bugs fixed. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 16.04, and Ubuntu 18.10.

Audacious 3.10.1 fixed following issues:

  • Crash on invalid tuple D-Bus request
  • Playlist search in Qt5 is really slow on huge playlists
  • Song Info window takes a few seconds to appear or UI freezes, when listening to an MP3 stream
  • Audtool doesn’t output UTF-8 on Windows
  • Info popup causes segmentation fault in Qt 5 UI
  • Playlist drag-and-drop no longer working in 3.10 (Qt UI)
  • Floating-point WavPack files play as noise

How to Install Audacious 3.10.1 in Ubuntu:

You can install the new release packages in Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 16.04, and Ubuntu 18.10 via the unofficial PPA.

After nearly a year of development, Audacious audio player 3.10 was finally released yesterday. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Linux Mint 19 and 18.

Audacious 3.10, code-named “Not Quite There Yet”, added following new features:

  • Shuffle history is remembered at exit to avoid repeating songs
  • Exported M3U and PLS playlists now use relative paths by default
  • Recursively adding subfolders to the playlist is now optional
  • The URL history shown in the Add/Open URL dialogs can be cleared
  • Toolbar buttons in the GTK UI now show tooltip hints
  • The adplug input plugin has a new settings window
  • The Search Tool can be configured to scan for new files at startup
  • The number of results shown in the Search Tool is now configurable
  • The Delete Files plugin is clearer about which files will be deleted
  • Icons from the desktop theme are used more consistently
  • Scalable icons are now used on Windows for better high-DPI support
  • The bottom info bar now matches the color tone of dark themes
  • The soxr resampler has some new, more detailed settings

Audacious audio player reached 3.9 release a few days ago with many new features, Qt UI enhancements, usability improvements, and various bug-fixes.

Audacious 3.9 release highlights:

  • New ‘View’ menu and additional options in Settings.
  • Full drag-and-drop capability for playlist entries
  • Configurable playlist columns (add, remove, resize, and rearrange)
  • New controls for stream recording
  • Improved playlist search bar, which hides until Control+F is pressed.
  • Integrated menu items and keyboard shortcuts for the Playlist Manager and Search Tool
  • Better high-DPI support and many other cosmetic fixes
  • audtool gains better support for multiple playlists with the --select-displayed and --select-playing commands

How to Install Audacious 3.9 in Ubuntu:

The Webupd8Team PPA has made the packages for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu 17.10, Linux Mint 18.x, and derivatives.

1. Open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching it from app launcher. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8

Type in your password (no visual feedback while typing due to security reason) when it asks and hit Enter.

2. Upgrade Audacious via Software Updater (Update Manager) if you have a previous release installed:

Or run following commands one by one to check updates and install the audio player:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install audacious audacious-plugins

Uninstall:

You can restore the Audacious music player to its stock version in your Ubuntu by puring the PPA via command:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8

You can then remove the audio player as you want via Ubuntu Software utility.

Audacious audio player has reached the 3.8.1 release one day ago with new feature opus cover art support in the info bar, and following bug-fixes:

  • Fix randomly freezes in Windows.
  • Time value can become larger than the track length by dragging the progress bar beyond the end of the trough.
  • The ‘Do not load metadata for songs until played’ option appears twice in the QT interface preferences

How to Install Audacious 3.8 Stable in Ubuntu 16.04

The Audacious audio player has reached the 3.8 stable release recently. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04 via PPA.

The 3.8 release features the ability to run multiple instances of Audacious. Instances are numbered and can be started with audacious -2, audacious -3, and so on; once running, they can be controlled with audtool -2 , audtool -3 , and so on. Each instance remembers its own configuration.

Audacious 3.8 also brings new audtool commands, improvements for Windows support and Cuesheet support, features port to Qt interface, and various bug fixes.

  • support adding remote folders (ftp, mtp, etc.)
  • drag & drop from search tool into playlists.
  • Option to display MMM:SS instead of H:MM:SS
  • Audio effects and equalization can optionally be applied to a stream recording
  • Album artist support for FLAC and Vorbis files (read-write)
  • Support for the freedesktop.org startup notification protocol

Audacious 3.8 multiple instances

Install Audacious 3.8 in Ubuntu:

While Audacious 3.8 is not available in any PPA at the moment, I’ve uploaded my personal build into PPA, available for Ubuntu 16.04 and Linux Mint:

1. To add the PPA, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

Type in your password (no visual feedback) when it asks and hit Enter.

2. Then launch Software Updater, and do “partial upgrade” since the 3.8 release uses the new library versions.

Or just run command to install or upgrade Audacious player:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install audacious

3. (Optional) Uninstall Audacious 3.8 from the PPA and downgrade to the stock version in Ubuntu 16.04, run command:

sudo apt install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps
