FeedReader

FeedReader is modern GTK+ 3 client for online RSS services like tt-rss and others.

FeedReader currently supports Feedbin, Feedly, FreshRSS, InoReader, Local RSS, Nextcloud/ownCloud, The Old Reader, and Tiny Tiny RSS.

It combines all the advantages of web based services like syncing across all your devices with everything you expect from a modern desktop application. It also allows to save articles to read-it-later with Instapaper, Pocket, or Wallabag.

Also it lets you share articals with others via Email, Twitter, Telegram.

How to Install FeedReader in Ubuntu 18.04 & Higher

The software is available in universe repositories of Ubuntu 18.10, Ubuntu 19.04, Ubuntu 19.10, but they are old and won’t receive future updates.

To install the latest release in Ubuntu 18.04 and higher, open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T or from application menu, and run following commands one by one:

1. First run command to install the flatpak framework:

sudo apt-get install flatpak

2. Add flathub repository, which hosts a large list of flatpak applications:

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

3. Finally install RSS client via command:

flatpak install flathub org.gnome.FeedReader

And future install updates if available via flatpak update org.gnome.FeedReader command.

(Optional) To remove FeedReader flatpak package, run command in terminal:

flatpak uninstall org.gnome.FeedReader

Liferea (Linux Feed Reader) 1.12.4 was released a day ago. The new release brings smaller bug and security fixes.

Changes in Liferea 1.12.4 include:

  • Add installable plugin to change accels
  • Fix segfault on date out of range
  • Fix Free Music Archive link in default OPMLs
  • Switch from persistent to session-only cookies
  • Fix unread count of vfolder

How to Install Liferea 1.12.4 in Ubuntu:

For Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Linux Mint 19, 18.x, the new release is available in a third-party PPA repository.

1. Open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching for ‘terminal’ from app launcher. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

Type your password (no asterisks feedback while typing) when it prompts and hit Enter.

2. Then upgrade Liferea via Software Updater utility:

or run commands one by one to install the Linux feed reader:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install liferea

Finally launch the news reader from your application launcher and enjoy! (Log out and log back if you don’t see the icon).

Uninstall Liferea:

As the PPA also contains many other software packages, you may remove it by launching Software & Updates and navigating to Other Software tab.

If you want to remove the news reader software, either use your system package manager or run command in terminal:

sudo apt-get remove --autoremove liferea

A new bug-fix release for Liferea 1.12 was released earlier today. A plugin installer plugin was introduced that allows easy discovery and installation of 3rd party plugins.

Full changes in Liferea 1.12.2 include:

  • Adding a plugin installer plugin that allows discovering and automatically installing 3rd party plugins
  • Drop language from user agent to increase privacy
  • Add transmission-gtk and aria2 as download tool options
  • New command line option --disable-plugins (-p) to start with all plugins disabled.

Liferea Feed Reader 1.12.1 Released with Some Fixes

The Liferea feed reader reached the 1.12.1 release earlier today with some bug-fixes. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu 17.10, Ubuntu 18.04.

Changes in Liferea 1.12.1 include:

  • Fix typo in debug message
  • Add patch: appstream data has new format
  • Fix that Liferea doesn’t remember the feeds’ custom settings
  • Fix assertions/crashes on changing view layouts
  • Workaround to avoid GtkPaned shrinking
  • Added Indonesian default feed list
  • And some translation updates.

The open-source Liferea feed reader finally reached the new stable 1.12.0 release after months of development. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu 17.10, Ubuntu 18.04.

Liferea 1.12.0 release highlights:

RSS Guard, a simple, light RSS and ATOM feed reader, has reached the 3.3.7 release with new features and some fixes.

According to the release note, the open-source Qt feed reader RSS Guard 3.3.7 features:

  • support custom user skins
  • option to switch on/off DB transactions
  • require MySQL >= 5.5
  • MySQL database backend now requires at least version 5.5
  • Size of attachment image is now configurable
  • All textual contents now locally saved in explicit UTF-8 encoding.
  • updated localizations and some fixes.

How to Install RSS Guard 3.3.7 in Ubuntu 16.04, 16.10:

The GetDeb repository has built the new release for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 16.10, and their derivatives.

Open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run following commands to add the PPA and install RSS Guard news reader:

1. Paste the command below in terminal and hit Enter to add the repository:

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu xenial-getdeb apps" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list'

You may replace the code name xenial (Ubuntu 16.04) with yakkety for Ubuntu 16.10.

Then setup the key via command:

wget -q -O - http://archive.getdeb.net/getdeb-archive.key | sudo apt-key add -

2. After that, either search for and install rssguard via Synaptic Package Manager, or run the commands below in terminal:

sudo apt update

sudo apt install rssguard

Uninstall:

To uninstall the software, either use Synaptic Package Manager or run the apt remove command with sudo privilege:

sudo apt remove rssguard && sudo apt autoremove

And you can remove the GetDeb repository via Software & Updates utility under Other Software tab.

The first release candidate for the new stable Liferea 1.12 (Linux Feed Reader) has been released. The new series of the open-source news aggregator now switches to WebKit2.

Main changes since Liferea 1.10 series:

  • Switch to Webkit2
  • Support for Do-Not-Track
  • Improved trayicon plugin
  • Support for Reedah and InoReader.
  • Support for categories in TheOldReader
  • Simplified handling of external browsers

In addition, the RC release adds support for downloading content that cannot be displayed by HTML widget (e.g., PDFs), shows new items count in tray icon and minimize to system tray (Gnome Classic) on window close, there are also some bug fixes and translation updates.

How to install Liferea 1.12 rc1 in Ubuntu:

Liferea does not provide pre-compiled Linux binaries, however, there are a few unofficial Ubuntu PPAs contain the most recent Liferea packages. And below is how to install Liferea 1.12 rc1 in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 14.04, or Linux Mint 17, 18 using my personal PPA:

1. Open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to add PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

Type in password (no visual feedback, so just type in mind and hit Enter) when it asks and hit Enter.

2. Then launch Software Updater and you’ll be able to upgrade Liferea news aggregator after checking for updates:

Or just run command to install or upgrade to Liferea 1.12 rc1:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install liferea

How to Restore:

To downgrade to the stock version of Liferea in Ubuntu main repository, purge the PPA via ppa-purge:

sudo apt install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

FeedReader is a modern desktop client for popular RSS-Web-Services such as TinyTinyRSS, ownCloud News or Feedly.

How to Install FeedReader via PPA:

Open terminal from App Launcher. When it opens, run below command to add PPA:

add-apt-repository ppa:eviltwin1/feedreader-stable

After that, refresh your system repository cache and install the client by running below commands one by one:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install feedreader

QuiteRSS news reader now is at version 0.17.0. The new release allows to browse feeds in newspaper layout.

QuiteRSS is a free and open source RSS/Atom feed reader available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. It aims to be quite fast and comfortable to user, and features embedded browser (Webkit core), Unity indicator, adblock, click to flash, and more.

According to the release note, since QuiteRSS 0.17.0 it allows to switch between the classic and newspaper layout mode through menu View -> Layout.

It has been found that the newspaper mode has an issue on news deletion. The developer commented that it will be fixed in next release.

Besides the newspaper mode, this release contains:

  • Added: Socks5 proxy support
  • Changed: News opening in external browser
  • Fixed: Sorting by feed title in news list

Install / Upgrade QuiteRSS in Ubuntu:

The latest release has been made into the official PPA repository, available for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and derivatives.

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, paste the commands below and run one by one will add the PPA and install the latest QuiteRSS packages:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:quiterss/quiterss

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install quiterss

After added the PPA, you can receive future updates by running regular system updates via Software Updater.
