As you know, Ubuntu keeps updating with new stable releases every 6 months, and the April releases in even-numbered years (e.g., 22.04, 24.04, and next 26.04) are usually Long Term Support (LTS) releases with 5 + 5 years support.

Due to popularity of rolling-release distributions (e.g., Arch Linux) and image-based immutable distributions (e.g., Universal Blue), Ubuntu introduced new monthly releases for the development Ubuntu editions.

Starting in May 2025, we’re introducing monthly snapshot releases for Ubuntu.

They are neither rolling releases nor 25.07 / 25.08, but 1st, 2nd, 3rd and maybe more snapshots from the development stream. According to the 25.10 release schedule, there will be:

  • May 29, 2025: Ubuntu 25.10 – Snapshot 1
  • June 10, 2025: Ubuntu 25.10 – Snapshot 2
  • July 15, 2025: Ubuntu 25.10 – Snapshot 3
  • August 19, 2025: Ubuntu 25.10 – Snapshot 4
  • September 18, 2025: Ubuntu 25.10 – Beta
  • October 9, 2025: Ubuntu 25.10 – Final Release

Meaning except for Beta and Stable Ubuntu releases, there will be snapshot releases in every month. And, they are created for better system-wide testing and earlier detection of regressions, rather than production use.

The first snapshot of Ubuntu 25.10, code-name Questing Quokka, has been rolled out. Ubuntu 25.10 will include GNOME 49, the latest Kernel (6.16 or 6.17), new Loupe image viewer and Ptyxis terminal emulator, VRR support in Mutter, toolkit updates. See the Quokka Roadmap for details.

Unlike the previous daily live built, the snapshot offers install images for all supported platforms. So far, they are:

  • Desktop images for modern X86_64 Intel/AMD, and ARM64 64-bit ARMv8 processors.
  • Server install images for modern Intel/AMD, ARM64, PowerPC64, IBM Z, and RISC-V computers.
  • WSL image (Windows Subsystem for Linux) for X86_64 and ARM64.
  • Pre-installed Desktop (arm64) and Server images allowing to unpack onto target devices.
  • And Netboot tarball.
