For users who are still using Ubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin, the official support will end soon in the next week!
User may choose to upgrade to Ubuntu 25.10 Questing Quakka with support until July 2026, then upgrade to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, or go back to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with standard support until 2029 and extended security maintenance until 2034.
Ubuntu announced the 25.04 support end of life date yesterday:
Ubuntu announced its 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) release almost 9 months ago, on 17th April 2025 and its support period is now nearing its end. Ubuntu 25.04 will reach end of life on 15th January 2026.

After the end of life date, 25.04 will no longer receive kernel updates, security fixes, and other updates. Software developers. launchpad PPAs, and popular apps (e.g., Chrome and Firefox) will not update for this EOL distribution anymore.
As time goes on, there’ll be more and more security vulnerabilities discovered, and due to lack of patches they make the system easy targets for malware and hackers. And, outdated kernel and libraries may break compatibility with modern applications (even when running as Flatpak in sandbox).
Upgrade to Ubuntu 25.10 or Install Ubuntu 24.04
If you would like to upgrade to Ubuntu 25.10, simply launch Software Updater, install all the available updates, restart computer if it asks, and finally run update-manager -c command in terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) to re-launch with new distribution check.
Finally, click “Upgrade…” button to start upgrading to 25.10, though it’s BETTER to backup important data first in case of failure.
Or, run command below to install the release upgrader:
sudo apt install ubuntu-release-upgrader-core
Then, use do-release-upgrade command to upgrade from command line, which is useful for Ubuntu server. For more, see the official guide.
For those who want to go back to Ubuntu 24.04, download the .iso image from releases.ubuntu.com/24.04 and you may follow the official guides to install Ubuntu desktop or Ubuntu Server. As well, backup important data first!
