By now, hopefully you’re already familiar with what monthly snapshots are. For those who are not, have a look at Jon’s blog post about it.

Now that you’ve got some context, I’d like to announce its second successful publication – Questing Snapshot 2. You can find the images on cdimage.ubuntu.com.

As you may know, Ubuntu changed its policy by introducing monthly snapshot releases for testing purpose.

The first snapshot for Ubuntu 25.10 was released in last month (May 29). Now, the second snapshot is out, though with 2 weeks delay according to the initial release schedule (has been updated).

Ubuntu 25.10, code-name Questing Quokka, is the next Ubuntu release scheduled to be released on October 9. It’s a short term release with 9 months support until July 2026.

After this snapshot, there will be snapshot 3, snapshot 4, and Beta releases planned for:

  • July 31, 2025: Ubuntu 25.10 – Snapshot 3
  • August 29, 2025: Ubuntu 25.10 – Snapshot 4
  • September 18, 2025: Ubuntu 25.10 – Beta
  • October 9, 2025: Ubuntu 25.10 – Final Release

There’s no changes for this single snapshot release, but a release note for 25.10 that updates regularly.

The big ones include (some features are not implemented so far):

  • GNOME Desktop 49.
  • New default apps: Loupe image viewer and Ptyxis terminal emulator.
  • Remove Ubuntu on Xorg session.
  • fully functional desktop session on RISC-V CPUs.
