Install Midori Web Browser vis Snap in Ubuntu 18.04, 16.04

Midori web browser now can be easily installed in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04 and higher via Snap package.

Midori is a light-weight web browser that uses Webkit rendering engine with GTK user interface. It is the default browser in the SliTaz Linux, Bodhi Linux, and Trisquel Mini.

The software maintainer has made the web browser into Snap package, which runs in sandbox and auto-updates itself once a new release is published.

How to Install Midori in Ubuntu:

For Ubuntu 18.04 and higher, simply open Ubuntu Software, search for and install midori:

For Ubuntu 19.04, there are two Midiro packages in Ubuntu Software. Check packages details, and install the one from Snap Store.

For Ubuntu 16.04, first open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and install snapd daemon first:

sudo apt-get install snapd

Then install Midori snap package via command:

sudo snap install midori

Uninstall:

To remove Midori web browser, either use Ubuntu Software (Ubuntu 18.04 and higher) or run command in terminal:

sudo snap remove midori

Midori Browser 0.5.9 Released With Important Bug Fixes

The Midori Browser 0.5.9 “Ballet” was released recently with various important bug fixes. The developer announced in the blog post:

Seven months of sweat and tears… oh well, not quite so dramatic. In any event Midori 0.5.9 is out!

We’re already scheming… I mean planning for the next cycle. We want to go WebKit2 and GTK+3 only now and do away with the fourfold compatibility setup. Anyone who finds this thrilling is more than welcome to join in; the fun is going to start soon.

According to the changelog, the 0.5.9 release brings below changes:

Fix the problem that Downloads do not work with WebKit2
about:new in urlbar for new tabs has been fixed.
Fix visibility of SpeedDial, Toolbar, Bookmarkbar context menu items
Fix crash right-clicking forms on local pages
Fix crash when activating the edit menu
Fix “open all in tabs” for bookmarks
Fix crash when saving with associated resources
Fixes tab history undo
Fix a few simple leaks
Show search menu upon left icon click in location bar
Connect bookmarks-db singleton correctly to fix menus
Make middle clicking reload button duplicate the current tab, similar to other browsers

How to Install / Upgrade to Midori 0.5.9:

The 0.5.9 release is ~~not yet~~ now available in the official PPA. ~~If you really want to install or upgrade to the new release, use the Development PPA~~. Ubuntu 14.10 and Ubuntu 14.04 are supported so far.

1. Press Ctrl+Alt+T to open terminal. When it opens, run commands below to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:midori/ppa && sudo apt-get update

2. After added the PPA, install the package via below command:

To install the GTK+2 version:

sudo apt-get install midori

~~To install the GTK+3 version:~~

sudo apt-get install midori-gtk3

3. (Optional) To remove the PPA as well as midori:

sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:midori/ppa

sudo apt-get remove midori

Install Midori Web Browser 0.5.8 in Ubuntu

Midori, a lightweight and fast web browser, just released version 0.5.8 with great improvements on Adblock and WebKit2.

According to the release note, Midori 0.5.8 added or fixed:

A statusbar icon for easy flipping filtering on and off and seeing whether anything was blocked on the site.
If you had problems with peculiar display problems whilst using Adblock, chances are good they’ll be gone with the upgrade
WebKit2 is making another big jump. Text selection behavior, favicons, support for multiple rendering processes, opening new windows and setting cache and cookie paths correctly.
Spelling corrections: Right-click an underlined word and pick a suggestion from the menu.
Two new extensions implement Ctrl+Enter to complete www. and .com and a handy little notes panel which automatically saves one or more snippets as you make changes.
Brand new file type editor (MIME type on Linux). Finally the user is in control of how files open, either via the Preferences or the right-click “Open With…” menu item.

Install Midori in Ubuntu:

It’s easy to install or upgrade to Midori 0.5.8 in Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 12.10, Ubuntu 12.04 and their derivatives such as Linux Mint, Elementary OS, and etc.

To do so, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the 3 commands below one by one:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:midori/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install midori

It will add the Midori PPA, do an update and finally install or upgrade the web browser. Once installed, open it from Unity Dash or Menu.

Midori Browser 0.5.7 Released, Install it in Ubuntu Linux via PPA

Midori, the lightweight, fast, and WebKit based web browser now is at version 0.5.7. As you may know, Midori is also the default web browser of the beautiful elementary OS.

In the new release you’ll find that the session management gets smarter about reacting to crashes by not loading the faulty website and running commands on the command line properly. Private browsing has also benefited from some bug fixing, such as not wrongly attempting to load favicons from disk and enabling the sidepanel.

There’s also a small new feature in Midori 0.5.7: Close Tabs to the Right, which may be useful for those who are opening too many tabs.

Midori browser 0.5.6 fixed 35 bugs, Install in Ubuntu via PPA

The lightweight Midori browser recently released version 0.5.6 with lots of changes, it fixed Ubuntu 12.04 building and Ubuntu 13.10 saucy menu issues and many other bugs.
