MuseScore, free music composition and notation software, released version 3.3 a day ago with new feature, many improvements and bug-fixes.

MuseScore 3.3 release highlights according to the release note:

  • Complete palettes redesign
  • Note Input workflow improvements
  • Native support for Roman numeral analysis and Nashville notation
  • Multiple improvements to the Plugin API
  • And various bug-fixes.

How to Install MuseScore 3.3 in Ubuntu:

APPIMAGE:

You can now download the Appimage (non-install single executable) package while Ubuntu PPA and snap packages are not updated at the moment.

MuseScore Appimage (64-bit)

Right-click the Appimage, go to Properties -> Permissions -> tick the box says ‘Allow executing file as program’, finally run it to launch MuseScore 3.3:

Native Ubuntu .deb package:

There’s a community maintained PPA repository contains most recent MuseScore .deb packages for Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.04, and Ubuntu 19.10.

NOTE: The PPA is not updated at the moment, check the previous PPA link before getting started.

1. Open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mscore-ubuntu/mscore3-stable

2. Then install the scorewriter via command:

sudo apt install musescore3

Snap package (Official):

MuseScore offers official Snap package (runs in sandbox), though it’s not updated at the moment.

Open Ubuntu Software, search for and install musescore package. And it will be updated automatically once the developer team published the 3.3 package into the snap store.

Note there are 2 or 3 MuseScore packages in Ubuntu Software. Select install the one from Snap Store.

Free scorewriter MuseScore 3.2 was released a day ago with dozens of bug-fixes as well as some improvements to user interface.

MuseScore 3.2 release highlights:

  • Default to dark theme on macOS Dark Mode
  • Sticking (the process of assigning certain notes to either our left or right hand) as a new command
  • A few improvements to user interface.
  • Fixed exporting parts from a score didn’t produce correct MIDI, MP3, WAV, OGG, and FLAC files
  • Fixed that tuplets and articulations were laid out incorrectly

Download / Install MuseScore in Ubuntu:

MuseScore has a stable PPA for Ubuntu 18.04 and higher, though it’s falling behind with version 3.0.5.

The open-source music notation software MuseScore 3.1 was released today with new features and significant improvements. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu.

MuseScore 3.1 release highlights:

  • Single-note dynamics.
  • Ignificant improvements to automatic placement and layout
  • Automatic placement no longer prevent user from moving elements
  • Fretboard diagrams improvements including:
    • Multiple dots per string
    • Partial and multiple barres
    • Different dot shapes (especially useful for Ted Greene diagrams)
    • Ability to not show nut
    • Customizable distance between strings and frets
    • Chord symbols for diagrams
  • New commands Edit > Paste Half Duration and Edit > Paste Double Duration
  • New command Tools > Unroll Repeats

How to Install MuseScore 3.1 in Ubuntu:

Install MuseScore via PPA:

The official MuseScore3 PPA maintains the latest packages for Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 18.10, Ubuntu 19.04, and derivatives.

The 3.1 release package will usually available in 2 or 3 days.

1. Open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T keyboard shortcut or by searching for ‘terminal’ from application menu. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mscore-ubuntu/mscore3-stable

Type user password (no asterisk feedback due to security reason) when it asks and hit Enter to continue.

2. Then install MuseScore 3 via command:

sudo apt install musescore3

Linux Mint 19 may need to refresh package cache by running command sudo apt update first.

Once installed, launch the software from application menu and enjoy!

Uninstall:

To remove the software, run command in terminal:

sudo apt remove --autoremove musescore3

To remove the PPA, go to Software & Updates -> Other Software tab.

Free score writer MuseScore 3 was released a few months ago. Finally the official PPA for MuseScore 3 is available for Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 18.10, and higher.

MuseScore 3 is a new major release that features automatic placement, brand new Mixer and Piano Roll, dark theme, notation improvements, and many other changes.

MuseScore 3 and MuseScore 2.3 can co-exist on one machine. Installation of the MuseScore 3 will create the association with .mscz/.mscx files, but you can keep using both versions of MuseScore on one machine.

How to Install MuseScore 3 via PPA in Ubuntu:

While MuseScore PPA contains the latest 2.3.x packages, a new official PPA for MuseScore 3 was created. You can do following steps to add the PPA and install the score writer.
