GIMP image editor released a new update for the 2.10 series few days ago! Here are what’s new and how to install guide for Ubuntu Linux users.
GIMP 2.10.34 is a new stable release features a lot of bug-fixes and a few enhancements. The official announcement is NOT ready somehow at the moment, though it’s released in gitlab project age. And, the source code is available to download at FTP web page.
For macOS, the DBus is now fully disabled as it in some cases could even cause app freeze. Open With feature still work fine, but other features using dbus (such as opening files or running batch commands from a separate GIMP process) won’t work. As well, check for updates function in macOS now works again.
The release also has some backports from the 2.99.x development releases. The “Canvas Size” dialog has been redesigned to use more horizontal space. And, it has new Template selector in resize dialog.
For PDF with transparent area, there’s new “Fill transparent areas with white” option which enabled by default on file import. And export dialog has “Fill transparent areas with background color” option to decide whether use transparent background.
Other changes in GIMP 2.10.34 include:
- Symmetry dockable contents is now shown, yet deactivated, when no images are opened
- Color scale preferences are now remembered across sessions.
- Import JPEG-XL metadata support.
- Export JPEG-XL support, always in 8bit lossless.
- New header with “visible” and “link” icons in item dockables
- Clipping layers better supported when importing PSD files
- Paths are now exported to PSD
- New option “Show reduced images” when loading TIFF images
- 16-bit per channel export for raw image data
How to Install GIMP 2.10.34 in Ubuntu Linux
Option 1: Flatpak
GIMP provides official Linux packages through universal Flatpak package, though it runs in sandbox environment.
Ubuntu user can press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal, and run the following 2 commands one by one to install it:
- Make sure the flatpak daemon installed by running command:
sudo apt install flatpak
- Then, install GIMP as Flatpak via command:
flatpak install https://dl.flathub.org/repo/appstream/org.gimp.GIMP.flatpakref
Once installed, start it either from app launcher or run flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP in terminal.
Option 2: Ubuntu PPA
For those prefer the classic .deb package format. I’ve uploaded the package into the unofficial PPA, with support for Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 22.10.
- First, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run command to add PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/gimp
- Then either upgrade GIMP using Software Updater, or run command in terminal to install it:
sudo apt install gimp libgegl-0.4-0 libbabl-0.1-0
For Linux mint, you may need to run
sudo apt updateto update package index first.
Uninstall GIMP:
For GIMP package installed as Flatpak, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to remove it:
flatpak uninstall --delete-data org.gimp.GIMP
Also run flatpak uninstall --unused to clean useless runtime.
For .deb package from PPA, open terminal and run command:
sudo apt install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/gimp
The command above will remove PPA and downgrade the GIMP package into stock version in system repository.
For choice, you may remove the PPA instead by running command:
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/gimp
And remove the GIMP image editor via:
sudo apt remove --autoremove gimp libgegl-0.4-0

Oh sorry! I saw that the official Flatpak updated to v2.10.34, so I follow the step to update the PPA.
Going to delete the package and revert v2.10.32 in the PPA.
GIMP 2.10.34 is now officially out.
Will you pack for focal as well?
The package is already there in the PPA!
There is no python support for the focal package?
GIMP 2.10.x so far does not support Python 3. You need to wait GIMP 3.0 due in this year, or try the GIMP 2.99.x development release.
If you meant for Python 2, the PPA uses the Ubuntu’s official packaging rule that disabled Python support. If you do need the function, feel free to follow this comment, I’ll try to add it in next build.
Up to now the packages included python (2) support for GIMP for the focal packages.
So I was just astonished hat you dropped that.
Of course I could go flatpak … but I’ld rather use the PPA as it integrates better into the system. So a build with python 2 is welcomed.

Updated with Python 2 support, but only for Ubuntu 20.04 because the dependency libraries have been removed from Ubuntu 2204+ repositories.

Yes, I know that there is no way for later Ubuntu/ Mint versions. But up to now I’m on Mint 20.1 and GIMP runs fine with python support.
So I would have missed it if it were not there just because of an update.
As long as we have GIMP 2.10.x we’re bound to python 2 :-(
Updated GIMP via the PPA and I’m getting the following error message:
gimp: error while loading shared libraries: libmypaint-1.5.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Anybody else getting the same problem? Ubuntu 20.04. 2.10.34-1build3~ubuntu2004
Turns out that I needed to install the following packages manually, and then the problem was solved:
libmypaint-1.5-1
libmypaint-common
Under Mint 21.1, I will gradually clean up with Bleachbit. There have never been any problems with this procedure. After the installation of 2.10.34 Gimp starts, I will be able to clean up after the start of Gimp only this rotating circle that disappears again after some time.

Llevo usando Corel Draw 20 años debido a un amigo vecino que me inculco a él, debido a los problemas de pirateria del software además que no esta tan fino como GIMP me dicidi a quitarlo para probar Gimp, es verdad que lo puse y quite varias veces porque estos programitas son la leche para entenderlos, concretamente los objetos en Corel Draw son las capas de GIMP y así sucesivamente el cambio se me hizo pesado pero cuando le fui cogiendo el truquillo he de admitir que es muy superior al Corel en todos los aspectos, tambien reconozco la inmensa cantidad de ayuda que ahi en internet de Gimp, simplemente es genial y puedo asegurar que hoy por hoy no lo cambio por Corel aún habiendolo usado 20 años, empeze con la version 5/6 hasta este año mira si ha llovido. ME GUSTA GIMP….Saludos a todos. P E D R O B…
