SuperTux 0.4.0

SuperTux, classic 2D jump’n run video game inspired by Super Mario Bros, released 0.6.2 a few days ago to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

SuperTux 0.6.2 features reworked graphics and levels, release highlights include:

  • A new worldmap, “Revenge In Redmond”, which includes new enemies and sprites !!!
  • New and improved backgrounds and sprites
  • Improvements to many levels in the Icy Island and forest world
  • Speed improvements for levels using a huge amount of lava tiles
  • An issue causing the bridge in the forest world to not be shown in certain cases was fixed

How to Install SuperTux 0.6.2 in Ubuntu:

For Ubuntu 18.04 and higher, SuperTux Snap package (runs in sandbox) can be installed directly from Ubuntu Software Center.

If you prefer Ubuntu .deb package, I’ve uploaded the packages into the unofficial PPA for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.10, and Ubuntu 20.04.

1. Open terminal either from system application menu or by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/supertux

Type user password (no asterisk feedback) when it prompts and hit Enter to continue.

2. If an old version of the .deb package was installed, upgrade it via Software Updater:

or run commands to install Supertux 0.6.2:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install supertux

Uninstall:

To remove the PPA, either go to Software & Updates -> Other Software or run command:

sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/supertux

To remove the game, run command:

sudo apt remove --auto-remove supertux supertux-data

SuperTux 0.4.0

SuperTux, classic 2D jump’n run side-scroller game inspired by Super Mario games, released version 0.6.1 a few days ago with new game content. Here’s how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.04, and Ubuntu 19.10.

SuperTux 0.6.1 is a bug-fix release for version 0.6.0 which was released almost a year ago. It also brings new graphics, levels and other game content:

  • Rework of the first 3 Bonus Worlds
  • Added 3 new bonus worlds to the core game
  • Improvements to the story mode
  • Addition of Ghost Forest to the Story Mode
  • New Backgrounds and Music by BlasterMaster
  • Tiles and Sprites Improvements by Alzter, weluvgoatz and RustyBox
  • New enemy: The Ghoul
  • Fixed buggy controls, game speed, etc.
  • Level Editor Improvements, Fixes and Optimisations
  • Revamp of the Credits Menu
  • Blocks no longer jitter when stacked on top of one another
  • Trampolines as bonus block contents no longer hurt Tux

How to Install SuperTux 0.6.1 in Ubuntu:

The SuperTux download page offers .Appimage (non-install executable file) and .Flatpak (runs in sandbox) packages for Linux.

For those prefer native Ubuntu .deb package, run following commands one by one to install it via an unofficial PPA.

SuperTux 0.4.0

SuperTux, a classic Super Mario-like 2D jump ‘n run sidescroller game, has reached the 0.4.0 release, a new STABLE release since 0.1.3 after more than 10 years of development.

Compared to 0.1.3, this release features:

  • a nearly completely rewritten game engine based on OpenGL, OpenAL, SDL2, …
  • support for translations
  • in-game manager for downloadable add-ons and translations
  • Bonus Island III, a for now unfinished Forest Island and the development levels in Incubator Island
  • a final boss in Icy Island
  • new and improved soundtracks and sound effects
  • new badguys, bonuses and power-ups (air-, earth- and ice-flower)
  • a halloween tilemap
  • new graphic effects (glowing objects, particles, …)
  • levels and worldmaps are scriptable using squirrel
  • much more game objects: trampolines, switches, portable stones, wind, moving platforms, … – most of them have scripting APIs
  • improved statistics
  • many invisible changes, like unit tests, efficiency improvements and more bugfixes
  • much more..

How to Install SuperTux 0.4.0 in Ubuntu:

For Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, the new release has been made into the official Ubuntu repositories, just search for and install the game via Software Center.

For Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 14.04, and Mint 17.x, run below commands one by one in terminal to install it from third-party PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install supertux supertux-data

For those who don’t want to add PPA, grab the .deb packages from links below:

1. First download and install supertux-data for both 32-bit & 64-bit:

2. Then install the .deb package for supertux:

Supertux, a classic 2D jump’n run sidescroller game inspired by Super Mario. It’s been more than 3 years since the last development of Milestone 2.

The new release Supertux 0.3.4 has been made into Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty. It is hard to
say what the most notable changes are, but one thing players should notice is a greater wealth of levels to play through an expanded availability of add-ons. Here’s how to install it via PPA in Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint.

To get started installing this game, press Ctrl+Alt+T on your keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run commands below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:landronimirc/supertux-git

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install supertux-git

You can also run command below to install the Supertux level editor, but it doesn’t work properly in my case:

sudo apt-get install supertux-editor-git

For old version and Supertux stable, search for and install them in Ubuntu Software Center.
