How to Install Cinnamon 2.6 in Ubuntu 15.04/14.04

Last updated: May 14, 2016

Cinnamon 2.6

The 2.6 release of Mint’s Cinnamon desktop environment has reached feature-freeze. The stable release is planned for the end of this month.

Cinnamon 2.6 brings some exciting new features, include:

  • support for systemd
  • panel support for multiple monitors
  • support for new GTK headerbar (client-side decorations)

Cinnamon 2.6 will be made into the Romeo repositories for Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca and LMDE 2 Betsy.

Install Cinnamon 2.6 in Ubuntu:

For Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 15.04 users, before it’s made into a stable PPA (I’ll update the PP once a stable PPA is available) you can now try out the new release through the Gwendal LE BIHAN’s nightly build PPA .

To add the PPA, open terminal and run command:

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly

Then update system package cache and install the desktop environment via commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install cinnamon

Once installed, log out and select login with Cinnamon.

(Optional) To remove this DE, run:

sudo apt-get purge cinnamon* nemo-* cjs muffin* python-nemo

Also remove the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly

thanks, especially explaining how to get rid of it again. Tried so many DEs, so far i’m not really happy since KDE3 died (no, trinity is not an option at all). But now testing …

  3. Muchas gracias, ya lo estoy probando en mi equipo

Thanks a lot for this PPA :)

Will you update it to the latest cinnamon version (2.6.8) soon?

    Christian

  5. On a freshly-updated Ubuntu 15.04 machine, the installation process does not work:

cinnamon : Depends: libcjs0 (>= 2.0.0) but it is not going to be installed

  6. I installed it, but it’s missing icons for standard things like the calculator and terminal, so it looks half-baked. I switched to Gnome metacity for the time being.

  7. Hi guys. I installed cinnamon desktop on Ubuntu 15.10. But after restarted system, isn’t any channging in my system.what’s my problem?

  8. I’ve installed Cinnamon on Ubuntu 14.04, but don’t know how to get it working; I went to the Unity Tweak Tool, but don’t really find anything. What gives? I’m surprised this info isn’t more readily available.

    • It’s a Desktop Environment, you need to log out current session and then select the DE by clicking the gear icon right after your user name.

  9. I just recently swtiched to cinnamon desktop from gnome as I did not really enjoy with new gnome interface. I used moorka ppa to install cinnamon on my 14.04 but from the time I login cinnamon session I notice the increasing memory consumption of cinnamon after straight use of 2 hours even though I didn’t use many applications simultaneously. When I restart the cinnamon alone from right-click menu on taskbar or restart the entire OS, at the beginning it pretends to drop 75MB of process memory without enabling effects of muffin but after a few minutes it can easily hike to above 100MB. Do anyone think it is because of display manager(lightdm)? should I change to MDM? if not what possibly be the real issue? I am really out of idea. Please help!

Will this work with Xubuntu? I’ve just fallen out of love with the XFCE desktop environment.
