How to Install Latest Avidemux 2.7.0 in Ubuntu 17.10, 18.04

Last updated: October 19, 2018

Avidemux video editor

The latest packages for Avidemux video editor 2.7.0 is available in GetDeb.net. However, the GetDeb repository is not updated for a few months, and there’s no packages for Ubuntu 17.10.

For those who don’t prefer the official Appimage (non-install) binary, I’ve uploaded Avidemux 2.7.0 packages into launchpad PPA (unofficial) to make it available for Ubuntu 17.10, Ubuntu 18.04. It also contains packages for Ubuntu 16.04, and Ubuntu 17.04.

UPDATE 201805: Rebuilt Ubuntu 18.04 packages due to updated system library. The plugin package now can be installed without dependencies issue.

1. To add the PPA, open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching for ‘terminal’ from app launcher. When it opens, run command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/avidemux

Input your password (no visual feedback while typing) when it prompts and hit Enter.

2. Then install avidemux2.7-qt5 package either via Synaptic Package Manager or by running commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install avidemux2.7-qt5 avidemux2.7-plugins-qt5

It’s avidemux 2.7 though it contains ‘2.6’ in its name.

Uninstall:

For any reason remove the software via command:

sudo apt-get remove --autoremove avidemux2.7-qt5

To remove the PPA, launch ‘Software & Updates’ utility and navigate to ‘Other Software’ tab.

  2. Installed according to instructions. When I try to open the video file, the window appears: unable to find the demultiplexer :(

  3. To those having issues, you’ll also need to install the avidemux2.6-plugins. Run “sudo apt-get -f install” from console after installation so you get everything installed that’s necessary.

  4. To remove the PPA you can just use the ‘-r’ switch

    sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/avidemux

  5. Hi, would it please be possible to update for bionic (18.04), when you try and install the plugins on 18.04 you get the following dependency error:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
avidemux2.6-plugins-qt : Depends: avidemux2.6-plugins-common but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libx264-148 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

    Thanks for the great work!!

    Many thanks for preparing this.
I am using ubuntu budgie 18.04
When I try to install, I get the same error message as Barry Quince (libx264-148 is an unmet dependency).
I was wondering how you got the code to compile. When I try, I get the error:
    — Build files have been written to: /tmp/avidemux_2.7.0/buildQt5
** Failed at make, result in /tmp/logbuildQt5**
The message in the log is
    make[1]: Leaving directory ‘/tmp/avidemux_2.7.0/buildQt5’
Makefile:154: recipe for target ‘all’ failed
    make: *** [all] Error 2
    Thanks

  7. I had the same problem as Barry Quince…

    This Worked:
    sudo apt-get install avidemux2.6-qt

    Download and install:

    libx264-148_0.148.2643+git5c65704-1_amd64.deb

    From:
    https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/amd64/libx264-148/download

    Then:
    sudo apt-get install avidemux2.6-plugins-q

The deb file is meant for Ubuntu 16.04.4, however it works fine
on my newly installed Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

  8. Same result on the 18.04 stable release (downloaded april 27)

  9. Thanks! Just installed via Ji’s updated PPA and no problems (Xubuntu 18.04).

  10. Thank you very much, sir. Works fine on Bionic Beaver 64bit ;)

  11. Maximized is broken in this build. Please fix.

  12. Having an issue on Bionic. I added the PPA listed above, but get the following trying to install 2.7:

    root@POKEY# apt-get install avidemux2.7-qt avidemux2.7-plugins-qt

  13. Thank you very much.
This worked perfectly in Linux Mint 18.3 and Lubuntu 18.04

  14. Thanks a lot!

    Works fine in Xubuntu 18.04.

  15. Hi,

Thank you for this package! I have a problem with an MKV file. The film is 3:20:xx long but when I open it in Avidemux it processes it as 1:16:xx only—the 2nd half of the film is missing.

    Any idea about this?
