HP Linux Imaging and Printing

HPLIP, HP print, scan, and fax drivers for Linux, released 3.20.5 a few days ago with new printers and Linux distributions support.

HPLIP 3.20.5 added following new devices support:

  • HP DeskJet 1200, Ink Advantage 1200
  • HP DeskJet 2300 All-in-One, Ink Advantage 2300 All-in-One
  • HP ENVY 6000 series, Pro 6400 series.
  • HP DeskJet Plus 6000, 6400 series
  • HP DeskJet 2700 and Ink Advantage 2700 All-in-One Printer series
  • HP DeskJet Plus 4100, Ink Advantage 4100 All-in-One Printer series
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise M610dn, M611dn, M611x, M612dn, M612x
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M634dn, M634z, M635h, M635fht, M636fh
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise Flow MFP M634h, M635z, M636z

The new release also added support for Debian 10.3, and Manjaro 19.0.

There’s also known issues that USB print and scan will not work on Vasari and Taccola on Ubuntu 20.04, please refer to link: manpages.ubuntu.com.

How to Install HPLIP 3.20.5 in Ubuntu:

Due to requirement of old legacy python 2 libraries, HPLIP 3.20.5 does not install on Ubuntu 20.04.

1. To install the software, download the package “hplip-3.20.5.run” from the link below:

2. Then open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching for “terminal” from app launcher. When it opens, run command to give executable permission:

chmod +x ~/Downloads/hplip-3.20.5.run

3. Finally run command to start installing the driver:

./Downloads/hplip-3.20.5.run

Follow the terminal output and answer some questions. If everything goes OK, plug or re-plug your HP devices and enjoy!

HPLIP 3.20.2, HP developed open source Linux driver for HP printers and scanners, was released today with many new devices and Linux Mint 19.3 support.

HLIP 3.20.2 added support for Linux Mint 19.3 and the following new printers:

3. Finally run command to run the downloaded file:

sh ~/Downloads/hplip-3.20.2.run

4. Follow the terminal prompts, answer some questions to build and install HPLIP on your system. When everything is done, plug/re-plug your printers and enjoy!

HPLIP 3.19.10, HP developed printer and scanner drivers for Linux, was released today with new devices and 64-bit Ubuntu 19.10 support.

HPLIP 3.19.10 added following new devices support:

NOTE: During hp-setup, automatic PPD selection path for some PS devices is wrong on Ubuntu 18.04. Work around is to select the PPD for the devices manually from “/usr/share/ppd/HP” path through browse option or reinstall cups.

Below are the commands to reinstall the cups filters.

sudo apt-get remove --purge cups

sudo apt-get install cups

sudo apt install --reinstall cups-filters.

How to Install HPLIP 3.17.6 in Ubuntu:

The official .run installer is available for download at the link below:

After downloaded the .run installer, open terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T or by searching for “Terminal” from app launcher. When it opens, run command:

cd ~/Downloads/ && chmod +x hplip-3.17.6.run && ./hplip-3.17.6.run

The commands navigate to your Downloads folder, give executable permission, and finally run the installer script in that terminal window.

Simply follow the terminal prompts, answer some questions, wait it automatically building HPLIP and setting up your devices, and enjoy.

Install HPLIP in Ubuntu:

1. Download the latest “hplip-x.x.x.run” package from the link below:

2. To install the package, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal, and run the command below:

sh ~/Downloads/hplip-3.14.10.run

You may change the name of “hplip-3.14.10.run” in the code depends on the package version you downloaded.

3. When the installation process starts, you’ll be asked for some questions. Answer a to select automatic mode, type in your user password (no visual feed back), and continue with the installation wizard until you’re done.

When everything is done, restart your computer and your printer should now work.

HP print, scan and fax Drivers for Linux just got an update a few hours ago with new printers and Linux Distros support, Linux Mint 17 Qiana is included.

HPLIP (Hewlett-Packard Linux Imaging & Printing) is an HP-developed solution for printing, scanning, and faxing with HP inkjet and laser based printers in Linux. It is free, open source software distributed under the MIT, BSD, and GPL license.

The latest HPLIP 3.14.6 was released on June 4th, which added support for Boss 5.0, Debian 7.5, Linux Mint 17, and following new printers:

1. Download the installer:

2. Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the installer via:

cd ~/Downloads && chmod +x hplip-3.14.6.run && ./hplip-3.14.6.run

Answer the questions to finish the installing process. Once done, restart your computer.

Issues fixed:

  • Fixed align functionality issue with HP OfficeJet 6100
  • Systray notification does not pop-up after configuring the device using ‘hp-setup’ command
  • Unable to configure second fax queue in interactive mode
  • Fixed missing ‘No 6 3/4 Envelope’ media size for HP OfficeJet 7619 Series
  • Printer name does not change when navigate back and forward to change the printer queue configuration through ‘hp-setup’

Install HPLIP:

1. Download the .run file from sourceforge page.

2. Right-click on the file and go to its Properties window, under Permissions tab check the box “Allow executing file as program”

allow hpip executable

3. Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the below command to start the installer:

./Downloads/hplip-3.14.3.run

Answer the questions and you’ll finally get the latest version of HPLIP installed on your system.
