Adobe Reader was available in Canonical Partners repository then dropped since Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy. This tutorial will show you how to install Adobe PDF Reader in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS from the official package.
UPDATE 2024: This tutorial is outdated! For all current Ubuntu releases, see this one instead!
Tutorial Objectives:
- Install Adobe Reader in Ubuntu 14.04
- Enjoy!
To get started:
1. Download the DEB package:
2. Install Gdebi to handle the DEB package. Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, paste the command below and run:
sudo apt-get install gdebi
3. Now install the package via Gdebi. It’ll also install the dependencies.
cd ~/Downloads && sudo gdebi AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i386linux_enu.deb
4. If Adobe Reader is still missing libraries after installation. Run the command below to install them:
sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-0:i386 libnss3-1d:i386 libnspr4-0d:i386 lib32nss-mdns* libxml2:i386 libxslt1.1:i386 libstdc++6:i386
That’s it. Enjoy!
(Optional) To remove Adobe Reader:
sudo apt-get remove acroread; sudo apt-get autoremove
This is what I get:
gdebi error, file not found: AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i386linux_enu.deb
Where you saved the file “AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i386linux_enu.deb”? Right-click on this file and select open with Gdebi if you don’t familiar with command line.
If you still get “file not found” error, please redownload the package and try again. Seems that it has something to do with the package downloaded from the Adobe website, because I was getting “file not found” error (2 times) too.
Remember do step 4 after installed this package.
Oh! I had skipped step 1!
Works great! Thx Ji m!
Does this also work in the 64 bit 14.04? seems like the file and all the added bts are for the i386 version! I really hate to run this and stuff my machine with bad libraries! what’s the story?
I’ve tested on my 64 bit laptop and it works. Adobe website only provide i386 deb packages. You can download & install the .bin file but the 32 bit libraries in step 4 are must.
Very good, thanks Ji m!
You the man, work like a charm

What should I do?
Sorry, David. For 32bit system the package name is lib32nss-mdns-i386. I’ve updated the command in the post so that it will automatically select the correct package to install.
If you were on 64 bit Ubuntu and got this error, then you must miss something:
1. Go to Unity Dash -> Search and open “Software & Updates” -> Make sure the first 4 boxes under “Downloadable from internet” are checked!
2. Do update your system:
Thanks for the tips on the install. It worked great.
Any chance you have encountered the issue of inputting Chinese into a pdf form? I cannot seem to input it with out it coming out as blocks?!
Thanks in advance!
I’ve spent a day trying to install Reader on Trusty and this was the advice that Worked! Thank you so much.

The linked download is painfully slow though it’s only 57MB (and my connection is fast).
Is there a decent mirror?
That is the official link from Adobe website. http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

Ji,
Cool,
thanks a lot
how did you set the pdf files to run as adobe? i tried checking in the properties of the pdf file but adobe doesn’t show the icon. please advice :)
Thanks.
edit the config file:
There you can change the default app by make it look like:
thanks. it worked :)
There is a much better way of doing this:
Add the partner repository from Canonical:
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ trusty partner"
Update sources:
sudo apt-get update
Install Adobe reader and other required libs:
sudo apt-get install acroread libgtk2.0-0:i386 libnss3-1d:i386 libnspr4-0d:i386 lib32nss-mdns* libxml2:i386 libxslt1.1:i386 libstdc++6:i386
Oops, It’s supposed to be
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ raring partner"
Conanacal and Adobe haven’t made a trusty tarh version of the deb, but the raring one gives you basically the same thing as if they made a trusty one or if you got the deb from the adobe website.Thank you very much. That worked pretty well :)
Many thanks Enkouyami, your solution worked for me perfectly.
Thank you, Enkouyami. Adding the raring repository and then adding acroread worked like a champ.

Thanks a lot!!! The other reader was really bugging me off… Adobe Reader rocks!!! :)
Thanks a lot…it’s working in 14.04
Thanks a Lot… It’s working in my 14.04 64 bit. God Job
Thank-you. Much appreciated. You rock!
Why even bother? Acroread is next to useless in comparison to Evince, but wastes a massive amount of valuable hard drive space.
Other PDF readers, including Okular, are superior (faster and lighter).
But I have to open files with Adobe DRM (teaching materials, I cannot do without it), which are only supported by the official reader. So, yes, acroread is buggy and slow, but still necessary in some cases, sadly.
I wish there would not be any DRM, but it is another story.
RE previous comment:
My bad: I got Acroread printing properly, it’s just a pity that everything in Linux is appallingly documented, and most web pages are either misleading or inaccurate.
Many thanks. Evince STILL haven’t solved the comments/annotations, so this was vital to me. That said, I do hope the Evince people get their act together and sort this one out.
Thanks. Worked without a hitch. How about updates though?
It works…. Thanks man!
We used ldap accounts with sssd daemon.
I encountered a problem with launching acroread from ubuntu 14.04 x86_64.
It did not report anything except exit code 1.
After that I used strace, and found that acroread tried to load x86 library of libnss_sss.
To resolve issue, install appropriate package:
sudo apt-get install libnss-sss:i386
I get this error in step 4
E: Unable to locate package libxm12
Plesae help
It’s libxml2, not libxm12
Thankyou very much for this Acrobat reader, I was searching for something like this, previously I was using windows and now I am using Ubuntu and Adope really make it easy to read any document I need to mark read or to take snap shot.
Thanks
But one thing I want to ask about the toolbar to mark or to add lines in the pdf file “only available when documents rights are enable”
What should be done to use “Comment & Markup tool”

Hi,
I keep running into this problem when I launch acroread from terminal. I think I have all necessary packages.
/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread: error while loading shared libraries: libxml2.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Run command below to know which package provides libxml2.so.2
It outputs something like:
So try to fix the issue by installing libxml2. Also install the i386 version:
Many thanks Enkouyami, your solution worked for me perfectly.
excuse me im new to linux and there is error even installing the package. hope u can help!
/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread: error while loading shared libraries: libxml2.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
An way to remove it?
I needed to download one pdf file from an application so I intalled Adobe Reader 9. The application still is not able to download & save the file. Also, wen I launch Adobe Reader 9 I got this message:”The brouse couldn’t be launched. Please check configuration in Edit-> Preferences -> Internet.
It’s looking for libgtkembedmoz.so & libxul.so. Thanks
Worked well EXCEPT I had trouble with the download from the web site — kept stalling. So instead I went to Adobe’s FTP site. I know nothing about the protocols, but it appears that FTP (I use Filezilla) has a “restart from previous point” and the browser does not.
Once I got the file everything worked. Thanks Ji m.
Here is the FTP directory that I used:
/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.5/enu
Thanks for the tutorial. However, I’d like to report that the download url is recognized as “Malware site” by ParetoLogic (scanned via VirusTotal). You can check it here
“https://www.virustotal.com/it/url/76e267608e58049d2c59dd18cbf8cadbc9df553a0608eed51ad3ec460ee36953/analysis/”
This was the official download link from Adobe website, though it has removed Linux support recently.
Awesome!!! I was working through a government website that only allowed adobe reader to open their protected file. What a pain!!! Your AR fix worked amazingly! Thank you so much!
This is a REALLY BAD IDEA. Reader 9 is no longer supported by Adobe and has not received any updates for recent security bugs. Encouraging people to install known-vulnerable software on top of an open source OS is just wrong.
And still, sometimes when you try to print documents from evince the printer chokes and the same document prints perfectly fine with Reader. I’d rather have the option to use it if needed.
I install adobe reader step by step. But it doesn’t work.My machine has a 64-bit OS of ubuntu
I was able to install AdobeReader 9, but I cannot start it. Nothing happens when I try to start the application to open a PDF file.
Your method worked flawlessly. Thank you!!
Thanks a million Ji M!
Rocking 12.04
Initially, I overlooked step one.
Step one is important
:-D
how do you remove this
hi, I just installed this package(on 64bit system). everything goes smoothly yet it doesn’t open! just that, I cant use it. it installed without error, and I have it in my menu yet it doesn’t open
What’s a deb or gdebi?
Hey,
How can I uninstall this? Something is wrong; after I installed it, my latex files can not be compiled.
When i try the first step it runs the file up to 100% then gives the following message
“The package teaviewer : i386 needs to be reinstalled, but i can’t find an arhive for it.”
now what should i do ?
Its not absolutely necessary to change /etc/gnome/defaults.list
If you want to have the entry in the menu “open with” you can modify
/usr/share/applications/acroread.desktop
Change this line: Exec=acroread
to Exec=acroread %f
Kudo to: http://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/2012/06/18/ubuntu-fix-add-program-to-list-of-applications-in-open-with-when-right-clicking-files-in-nautilus/
1. aptitude search adobe
If you found adobereader-enu, then do
2. apt-get install adobereader-enu
Thats it. If not found adobereader-enu, then follow the above procedure :)
How to install adobe reader 10+ in ubuntu 14.04
Adobe Reader has dropped support for Linux platform. Only way to run adobe reader 10+ is using Wine
Thanks a lot, you saved me a lot of time!
Hi,
The install worked great. There does, however seem to be a problem for people using Adobe Reader to work with online services (such as for submitting UK tax returns and company filings). Mine is telling me that it the services is not available, yet Wireshark and netstat show no connection attempts.
If anyone manages to resolve this problem I’d love to hear. For now, I’m having to resort to using Windows via the modern.ie Windows 7 virtual machine image.
Cheers,
Neale
Hello,
Thanks a lot. It was very helpful. I am new to use Ubuntu. Actually got stuck at one point i.e. #unable to lock the administration directory…. a thread locked at some point, so I have used sudo lsof /var/lib/dpkg/lock to find it, then consider doing a sudo kill -9 and then finally it did work.
Adobe still has the deb file on their ftp site. Just grab it from them at: ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.5/enu/
Smarter, not harder.

Yes. It means you will not get updates from Adobe. It also means that a ~maliciously crafted PDF~ might fuxor your Linux.

resolved using:

Hi Ji m,
Useful info, thanks! your solution helped me to install adobe seamlessly on my unix (14.04) but neither I am able to open pdf file in adobe nor I am able to find adobe reader when I enter in search. FYI, when I right click on any pdf file I don’t see adobe reader (instead I still see default document viewer) even I tried using “Open With” to find in other applications not no help.
Appreciate your help!

With regards,

I gad been having issues with Adobe Reader for about a year on Trusty. I used:
sudo apt-get install –reinstall libgtk2.0-0:i386 libnss3-1d:i386 libnspr4-0d:i386 lib32nss-mdns* libxml2:i386 libxslt1.1:i386 libstdc++6:i386
and now it works much better. Thanks you.
Thanks for this tutorial!
I went through everything including the extra components and it seems to work fine up to the point I actually want to open a document. It asked me to agree with the license agreement, so I said sure, then it opened a clear window named “Adobe Reader” with a view of what lay behind it and autoquit in five seconds.
Any idea what I can do to avoid this behavior?
Thank! Link is still working. I use Elementary OS Freya… works out of the box with your tutorial.
Hey
Thanks for the commands!
Are you aware on any updates upon this?
The highlighter seems to be missing here.
Ji M
I have been following your blogs from a while. I think you need to revisit this particular one and update the steps based on Enkouyami comments too. Apparently they are working !!

What will Step 1 be in the case that I want adobe reader 11?
