How to Install RedNotebook 2.12 in Ubuntu 19.10, 18.04

RedNotebook, desktop diary and personal journaling tool, released version 2.12 today. Here’s how to install it in all current Ubuntu releases.

RedNotebook is a free daily journal lets you format, tag and search your entries. You can also add pictures, links and customizable templates, spell check your notes, and export to plain text, HTML or LaTeX.

RedNotebook 2.12 was released today as the latest version that features:

  • Allow linking between days with dates like 2019-02-14 and ‘[named links 2019-02-14]’
  • Allow opening statistics dialog multiple times in one session.
  • Warn about outdated backups every week by default.
  • Increase default width of left panel to ensure that the calendar is fully visible.

RedNotebook official PPA contains the latest packages for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.04, Ubuntu 19.10, Linux Mint 18.x, 19.x, and even Ubuntu 20.04.

1. Open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T keyboard shortcuts or by searching for ‘terminal’ from application menu.

2. Copy and paste following command into terminal and hit run to add the RedNotebook PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rednotebook/stable

Type user password (no asterisk feedback due to security reason) when it prompts and hit Enter.

3. Finally check updates and install the desktop journal software by running following 2 commands one by one:

sudo apt update 

sudo apt install rednotebook

Ubuntu 18.04 and higher can skip sudo apt update command since it’s already done while adding PPA.

Uninstall:

To remove RedNotebook desktop journal, open terminal and run command:

sudo apt remove --autoremove rednotebook

And remove the PPA via Software & Updates utility -> Other Software tab.

RedNotebook 2.8 Released with Internal Previews Support on Windows

RedNotebook, cross-platform desktop diary and journal software, released version 2.8 today with support for internal previews again on Windows.

RedNotebook also released version 2.7 and 2.7.1 in recent days. Here are the changes:

  • Never let search phrases end up in the main text field
  • Fix spell checking
  • Use GtkSourceView for editor to obtain better undo/redo functionality
  • When saving, update the list of tags in the auto-complete list for the search.
  • Fix opening RedNotebook homepage from About dialog

How to Install Rednotebook 2.8 in Ubuntu:

The official PPA contains the latest packages for Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 16.04, and Ubuntu 18.10.

1. Open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T keyboard shortcuts or by searching for ‘terminal’ from software launcher.

2. Copy and paste following command into terminal and hit run to add the RedNotebook PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rednotebook/stable

Type your password (no asterisks feedback due to security reason) when it prompts and hit Enter.

3. Finally check updates and install the desktop journal software by running following 2 commands one by one:

Desktop Journal App RedNotebook 2.6 Released (Howto Install)

Rednotebook 2.6, a GTK+3 desktop journal software, was released recently with date format improvements and few other changes.

RedNotebook is a modern journal lets you format, tag and search your entries. You can also add pictures, links and customizable templates, spell check your notes, and export to plain text, HTML, Latex or PDF.

The latest Rednotebook 2.6 features:

  • Move date format option to preferences dialog.
  • Use date format option for date in titlebar.
  • Remember selected date format for exports between sessions.
  • Check remote info.py file for latest version number.
  • Check for latest version in separate thread.

How to Install Rednotebook 2.6 in Ubuntu:

The software has an official stable PPA that contains the latest packages for Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 16.04 so far. And below will show you how to add the PPA and install RedNotebook.

1. Open terminal either via Ctrl+Alt+T keyboard shortcuts or by searching for ‘terminal’ from software launcher.

Install The Diary Software ‘RedNotebook’ 1.9 in Ubuntu 14.04/12.04

RedNotebook, a cross-platform diary and journal software, has been updated to the 1.9.0 release recently with a few improvements and bug fixes.

For those who have never heard of RedNotebook, it is a free and modern journal that includes a calendar navigation, customizable templates, export functionality and word clouds. With it, you can also format, tag and search your entries.

It features:

  • Tagging
  • Format your text bold, italic or underlined
  • Insert Images, files and links to websites
  • Links and mail addresses are recognized automatically
  • Spell Check on Linux
  • Live-Search
  • Automatic saving
  • Backup to zip archive
  • Word Clouds with most often used words and tags
  • Templates
  • Export the journal to PDF, HTML, Latex or plain text
  • The data is stored in plain text files, no database is needed
  • Translated into more than 30 languages

The latest 1.9.0 release was released a few hours ago with below changes:

  • Add #tags to cloud ignore list to remove them from the tag cloud (thanks Przemysław Buczkowski).
  • Remove option to start RedNotebook minimized.
  • Do not remove menu bar in fullscreen mode (lp:1400356).
  • Allow exiting fullscreen mode with ESC key.
  • Only allow comment signs (#) at the beginning of a line in the config file.
  • Fix reading configuration files.
How to Install / Upgrade to RedNotebook 1.9.0 in Ubuntu:

The official PPA repository has made this release available for Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 10.04 and derivatives

To add the PPA and install the software, press Ctrl+Alt+T to open terminal, then run the commands below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rednotebook/stable

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install rednotebook

If you don’t want to add the PPA, download the “rednotebook_VERSION_OS-EDITION_all.deb” package from the launchpad page. Finally double-click to package to open with Ubuntu Software Center and click install.

RedNotebook 1.8.0 released, Install it in Ubuntu Linux Mint

RedNotebook, a modern journal app with calendar, templates and keyword searching, is now at version 1.8.0. See what’s new in this release:

  • Add font selection for edit mode (Philip Akesson).
  • Allow changing preview and cloud font in preferences.
  • Only allow opening RedNotebook minimized on Windows since other systems may lack a system tray.
  • Fix: Display tags starting with “SEP” in preview.
  • Write scripts to cross-compile RedNotebook Windows exe and installer on Linux.

The PPA has updated the packages for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.10, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 10.04, Linux Mint and their derivatives.

To get started installing or upgrading this app, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:rednotebook/stable

Then update package lists:

sudo apt-get update

Finally install the app:

sudo apt-get install rednotebook

Once installed, you can find it from Menu or Unity Dash:

  • Jump to a specific date on startup with “–date 2013-10-31” on the commandline (Rob Norris).
  • Display current date in the title bar (Rob Norris).

  • Add DejaVu Sans as font fallback for clouds and preview.
  • Fix setting last image directory for insert dialog.
  • Only allow exporting selected text if we are in edit mode (lp:1221792).

To add the RedNotebook official PPA and install the app, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run commands below one by one:
