0 A.D. PPA

0 A.D., a free open-source real-time strategy video game, released Alpha 24 “Xšayāršā” a few weeks ago. Here’s how to install the game in Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 20.10 via PPA.

How to Install 0 A.D. Alpha 24 in Ubuntu:

The game has an official PPA, which is however not updated for the new release almost a month after the release date.

For choice, xtradeb games PPA has made the package for Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 20.10, Linux Mint 20.

1.) Open terminal from system application menu. When it opens, run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xtradeb/play

Type user password (no asterisk feedback) when it asks and hit Enter to continue.

2.) Then either install the game package via command:

sudo apt install 0ad

or update from an old release via Software Updater.

How to Remove 0 A.D.

As the PPA also contains many other game packages (e.g., openra, speed dreams, warzone2100, etc), you may remove it via Software & Updates tool under Other Software tab.

To remove 0 A.D. package, just run command:

sudo apt remove --auto-remove 0ad 0ad-data

The Wildfire Games team offers an official PPA that contains the latest packages for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 17.10, and their derivatives.

1. Open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wfg/0ad

Type your password (no visual feedback while typing due to security reason) when prompts and hit Enter.

2. Then upgrade the game from an existing release via Software Updater:

Or simply run commands to update and install the game:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install 0ad 0ad-data

Uninstall:

Purge the PPA via the following command will remove the PPA as well as downgrade 0 A.D. to its stock version in your Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:wfg/0ad

If you still want to remove the game, either use your system package manager or run command:

sudo apt-get remove --autoremove 0ad 0ad-data

The Wildfire Games team is currently building (and testing) the PPA packages. It will be soon available in the official PPA for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu 17.10, and their derivatives.

How to Install 0 A.D. Alpha 21 in Ubuntu:

The official 0 A.D. PPA just built the new release a few hours ago, available for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 16.10, Ubuntu 17.04, and Linux Mint 18, Elementary OS Loki, etc.

To install it, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and do:

1. Run command to add PPA (Type in password when it asks and hit Enter.):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wfg/0ad

2. To upgrade from a previous release, now launch Software Updater and install the updates for the game:

To install it for the first time or upgrade it from the command line, run command:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install 0ad

Uninstall:

To remove the game, use Ubuntu Software or Synaptic Package Manager. The PPA can be removed via System Settings -> Software & Updates -> Other Software tab.

To downgrade to the stock version of 0 A.D. in official Ubuntu repository, purge the PPA via command:

sudo apt install ppa-purge && sudo ppa-purge ppa:wfg/0ad

The nineteenth alpha version of 0 A.D., a free, open-source game of ancient warfare, was released yesterday. PPA’s ready for Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 14.04, and Ubuntu 12.04.

Install 0 A.D. from PPA:

There’s an official PPA repository for all current Ubuntu releases and derivatives. Follow below steps to add PPA and install the game.

1. Add 0 A.D. PPA

Open terminal from Unity Dash, App Launcher, or via Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key. When it opens, paste below commands and hit Enter:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wfg/0ad

Type in your password when it asks, no visual feedback so just type in mind, and hit Enter to continue.

2. Install or Upgrade the game.

If you have a previous version installed on your system, upgrade the game by launching Software Updater and installing available updates after checking for updates:

Or you may run below commands one by one in terminal to refresh system cache and install (or upgrade) the game:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install 0ad

3. (Optional) Uninstall

remove the PPA via Software & Updates -> Other Software tab and remove the 0 A.D. using Software Center.

How to Install & Upgrade 0 A.D. in Ubuntu:

An official Ubuntu PPA has been created for Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, Linux Mint 13, and Linux Mint 17.

To add the PPA and install 0 A.D., press Ctrl+Alt+T to open terminal and run below commands one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:wfg/0ad

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install 0ad

After that, you can receive future updates by running regular updates via Software Updater utility.
