ClassicMenu Indicator 0.10 has been released. Now it’s based on GTK3 and supports Ubuntu 16.04.

ClassicMenu Indicator is a system tray area applet provides classic GNOME-style application menu for those who prefer this over the Unity dash menu.

Since the last was released two years ago, ClassicMenu Indicator 0.10 brings following changes:

  • ported to GTK3, Python3
  • Ubuntu Software Center in main menu
  • custom logo icon support
  • new preference window allows to change menu definitions, icons, and other settings.
  • show wine applications, and even Android apps for me.
  • various fixes and translation updates

Download and Install ClassicMenu 0.10:

Download the “classicmenu-indicator_0.10_all.deb” package from either

ClassicMenu Indicator Webpage

or

the Official PPA

Then click install it via Software Center. Works for all current Ubuntu releases and based systems, though it’s built against Ubuntu 16.04.

Finally launch ClassicMenu indicator from the Unity Dash menu. Or just log out, it’ll start automatically at next login.

To install the applet:

The developer has built the indicator binary into PPA. You can download the .deb package from the link below:

Download classicmenu-indicator_xxx_all.deb

Once the download process finished, double-click the package in file browser to open it with Ubuntu Software Center and click the install button.

Or install it via command in terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T):

sudo dpkg -i ~/Downloads/classicmenu-indicator_*.deb

When done, you can start the classic Gnome Menu from the Unity Dash, or let it open automatically at next log-in.

Classic Menu Indicator 0.09 was released recently with more languages support and now it use unity-lens-applications.menu for Ubuntu Unity.

As you may know, ClassicMenu Indicator is a notification area applet (application indicator) for the top panel of Ubuntu’s Unity desktop environment. It provides a simple way to get a classic GNOME-style application menu for those who prefer this over the Unity dash menu. Like the classic GNOME menu, it includes Wine games and applications if you have those installed.

Classic Menu Indicator 0.09 contains below changes:

  • use $XDG_MENU_PREFIX (LP: #1228053)
  • use unity-lens-applications.menu for Unity
  • don’t use gtk.image_new_from_stock (LP: #1220961)
  • Added Arabic, Bulgarian, Catalan, Galician, Greek, Norwegian Bokmal, Spanish, Swedish, Telugu, Turkish translations
  • Added some menu items to change configuration

Install Classic Menu indicator:

Download & install the DEB or build the source tarball: official download page.

Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 13.10 and Ubuntu 12.10 users can also install it from the developer’s PPA. Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the commands below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diesch/testing

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install classicmenu-indicator

Classic Menu Indicator 0.08 Has Been Released

After about one year and a half, Classic Menu Indicator finally released a new version 0.08. It brings a few improvements and adds support for more languages.

As you may know, ClassicMenu Indicator is a indicator applet for Unity, that provides the main menu of Gnome2/Gnome Classic.

New features in ClassicMenu indicator 0.08:

  • ClassicMenu Indicator has its own icon now
  • added support for some configuration options
  • improved handling of missing/unusable icons
  • extended “ClassicMenu Indicator” submenu
  • added Estonian, French, Croatian, Japanese, Malay, Brazilian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese (Simplified) language support
  • changed the way commands are run

To install Classic Menu Indicator 0.08, just download and double-click to install the DEB:
