HotShots screen capture tool

HotShots, a screenshot and annotation tool, now is at version 2.2.0. PPA has updated for Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04 and derivatives.

Hotshots is a screenshot tool with some editing features. It is particularly suitable for writing documentation (as used in the following chapters) but you can use it to highlight some details on a map image or what ever you want.

Besides basic screen capturing and editing features, HotShots allows to send image directly to printer or to web services, such as FTP, imgur.com, imageshack.us, canardpc.com, freeimagehosting.net.

HotShots is a good and lightweight alternative to Shutter except:

  • Undo/Redo buttons are grayed out.
  • Does not support Dropbox.

Install HotShots 2.2.0:

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, paste the commands below and run one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install hotshots

If you don’t want to add the PPA, grab the .deb package directly from Launchpad Page.

Because HotShots is written with Qt. Compare to Shtter, it has few dependencies and uses lower computer resources.

  • Grab current screen, all monitors (in case of multi-monitors configuration), current window or a part of the desktop.
  • Save the screenshot in multiple formats (PNG, JPG, BMP, …).
  • Automatically save the screenshot to clipboard, disk or launch the editor tool.
  • Automatically scale the screenshot to a given size.
  • Use “system” shortcuts to take a screenshot.
  • Add automatically some “post-effects” to the screenshot (drop shadow, rotation, border, …).
  • Add annotation items (text, arrows, rectable, …) to the snapshot.
  • Can be minimized to system tray and work in background.
  • Can be launch at system start-up (Windows).
  • Export edited image in multiple formats (PNG, JPG, BMP …).
  • Save/Restore edited image in proprietary format.
  • Send image directly to printer or to web service.

Install HotShots in PPA:

HotShots does not provide .deb package or apt repository for Ubuntu user so far, but you can always install the latest release from the launchpad PPA, works for Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 12.04.

To add the PPA, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, paste the command below and hit enter:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

After that, update package lists and install the screen capture:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install hotshots

Once installed, open it from Unity dash or application menu and enjoy!

Hotshots, a screen capture with some editing feature now is at version 2.1.0. The new release brings a faster launch time and some new features.

Hotshots 2.1.0 changelog:

Install / Upgrade:

There are a few Launchpad PPAs that contain the most recent build of HotShots, available for Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 13.10, and Ubuntu 12.04.

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open the terminal. When it opens, run the commands below one by one to install HotShots from ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps

sudo apt-get update

HotShots is a Qt based screen capture software available for Windows, Linux and FreeBSD. It allows to capture screens and save them in a variety of image formats as well as add annotations and graphical data (arrows, lines, texts, …).

It is kinda similar to Shutter, but HotShots has few dependencies and takes small memory usage. The current release 2.0.1 brings below changes:

  • Enhanced shortcut editor
  • Add portable settings support (–portable option)
  • Add valid debian package files

  • Correct invalid freehand and region grabbing on linux (multi monitor)

If you would like to try this screen capture tool, press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run below commands one by one:

Works for Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 12.04. Download the .deb from launchpad page if you don’t like PPAs.

Uninstall:

HotShots, a Qt screenshot tool with some editing features now is at version 2.0.0 with many new features added and bug fixes. I’ve create a PPA and you can easily install it in Ubuntu 13.10, Ubuntu 13.04, Ubuntu 12.10, Ubuntu 12.04 via 3 commands in terminal.

    The HotShots screenshot tool 1.2.0 has been released. This simple tutorial shows you how to install or upgrade to this version on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring, 12.04 Precise and 12.10 Quantal.

    HotShots is an application for capturing screens and saving them in a variety of image formats as well as adding annotations and graphical data (arrows, lines, texts, …). Because HotShots is written with Qt, it runs on Windows and Linux

    The new release has some layout changes. The editor has multi-selection, the ability to select shadows on each item, the ability to edit some items (polygon, polyline, and curve) more easily, and the ability to add post-effects to the image background. The uploader adds a user field to define the output template for FTP uploader. The ability to send a document directly to the printer has been added. Slovak, Turkish, Russian, Sinhala, Serbian, Czech, Vietnamese, Basque, Spanish, and Chinese translations have been added.

    Install HotShots:

    A PPA repository has been created to make it easy to install for Ubuntu and Linux Mint users. So far it supports Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtal, 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin.

    After that, update package lists and install HotShots screenshot tool via below command:
