Oracle announced the 7.2.14 version of the VirtualBox virtualization software on Tuesday for Linux, Windows, macOS, and Solaris.
The new version of this free open-source hypervisor added initial Linux 7.2 Kernel support, though the kernel version is still in RC development stage.
Linux 7.2 is the mainline kernel that’s in development, and, predicted to be released on August 23, 2026. And, it’s expected to be the default Kernel in the next Ubuntu 26.10 Stonking Stingray.
The new kernel features AMDGPU HDMI 2.1 FRL for high-bandwidth 4K/8K displays, AMD ISP4 driver, NVIDIA Rust components, Apple M3 boot support, and many other exciting new features.
If you’ve already upgrade to 7.2 Kernel in your Linux computer, then VirtualBox needs to be updated to version 7.2.14 for being able to run virtual machines within it.
Besides 7.2 Kernel support on Linux host, this version also added RHEL 9.8 and 9.9 kernels support for Linux Distributions running in VBox virtual machines.
For Windows, VirtualBox 7.2.14 fixed clipboard handling of Unicode formats to avoid scrambled characters when copying and pasting files from Windows host to VM. It also fixed installation issue on Windows 11 host, due to Visual C++ runtime detection issue.
It as well improved VMM (Virtual Machine Monitor) support when using Windows Hyper-V as the virtualization engine, fixed Windows 11 reboot issue when updating Secure Boot DBX entries, and, added patch to build Guest Additions with NASM only.
