gThumb Gets Its First Bug-fix Release in The 4.0 Series

gThumb, the GNOME photo manager and image viewer, released new 4.0.1 version.

This is a small release that features a new preferences option, several fixes and translation updates.

As you may know, gThumb 4.0 is a big release series that features GTK4/LibAwaita port with modern and native UI in recent GNOME desktops.

It also features animated WEBP and PNG images support, saving images to JPEG-XL (.jxl), new Censor filter, and touch friendly user experience.

Along with new features, it also introduces bugs. The app could crash when the monitor has no description, and crash when reading orientation tag in TIFF files. Both are fixed in the new 4.0.1 version.

It also fixed a regression that gThumb could not open remote images from SMB/Samba network shares though GNOME Files (aka Nautilus).

Other changes include some translation updates! Nothing else.

The source tarball for the new 4.0.1 version is available to download in the Gitlab project page.

Besides building from the source or waiting for your distribution package update, Ubuntu 26.04 and 26.10 may also install it from this unofficial PPA.

To add the PPA and install gthumb 4.0.1, open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run commands below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/gthumb
sudo apt update
sudo apt install gthumb

NOTE for Ubuntu 26.04, the PPA contains an updated version of libraw library that can break other apps, such as nomacs.
