Transmission BitTorrent

Transmission, the default BitTorrent client of Ubuntu, has reached the 2.90 release. Now it’s available in PPA for Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, and their derivatives.

Transmission 2.90 brings miniupnpc API v14, CyaSSL/WolfSSL and PolarSSL cryptographic backends support, various bug fixes and performance improvements to GTK & Qt clients. Read the changelog for details.

How to Install Transmission 2.90 in Ubuntu:

For Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, and derivatives, follow the steps below to install or upgrade the GTK and/or CLI version:

1. Add Transmission PPA.

Launch terminal from App Launcher or via Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key. When it opens, paste below command and hit run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:transmissionbt/ppa

Type in your password (no visual feedback when typing) when it asks and hit Enter to continue.

2. Launch Software & Updater and you’ll see the 2.90 release of Transmission available in update list after checking for updates.

3. (Optional) For any reason you want to revert the changes and downgrade to the stock version of transmission available in your Ubuntu release, purge the PPA via ppa-purge:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

sudo ppa-purge ppa:transmissionbt/ppa

qBitTorrent in Ubuntu

A new release of qBittorrent, a free BitTorrent client in Qt, was released yesterday with a new feature, various bug-fixes and other improvements.

qBittorrent 3.2.4 is the last release in the 3.2.x series. It adds a feature that auto-select the file of single file torrents when opening destination folder, and finally fixes an obscure “hit-and-run” bug with trackers.

Install / Upgrade qBittorrent in Ubuntu:

The new release has been made into its official PPA repository, available for Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04, and derivatives, e.g., Linux Mint 17.x and Elementary OS Freya.

1. Add PPA.

Open terminal from the Dash, App Launcher, or via Ctrl+Alt+T shortcut key. When it opens, run command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:qbittorrent-team/qbittorrent-stable

2. For those who have a previous version installed, launch Software Updater (or Updater Manager for Mint, need refresh). You’ll see qBittorrent in the update list

qBitTorrent in Ubuntu

qBittorrent, a free and cross-platform BitTorrent client, has recently reached the 3.2.0 release with a huge list of changes.

qBittorrent 3.2.0 brings some exciting new features, including Qt5 supports, option to auto-hibernate computer, Haiku OS support, highlights files when opening containing folder on Windows and Linux(nautilus, dolphin, konqueror).

How to Install/Upgrade qBittorent in Ubuntu:

For Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 14.10, and their derivatives (build for 12.04 failed), the new release is available in its official PPA.

Open terminal from the Dash/Menu (or press Ctrl+Alt+T). When it opens, run command to add qBittorrent PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:qbittorrent-team/qbittorrent-stable

After adding the PPA, you can either upgrade the software via Software Updater, or install/upgrade it via below commands in terminal:

Vuze BitTorrent Client

Vuze BitTorrent Client, previously Azureus, has recently reached 5.5.0 release with new features and enhancements. Here’s how to install or upgrade it in Ubuntu.

Vuze is written in Java, and uses the Azureus Engine. In addition to downloading data linked to .torrent files, Azureus allows users to view, publish and share original DVD and HD quality video content. Content is presented through channels and categories containing TV shows, music videos, movies, video games, series and others. Additionally, if users prefer to publish their original content, they may earn money from it.

For non-install version, download the official package from vuze.com, extract and finally run the executable from the result folder.

Or you can install Vuze from the Getdeb repository, just download below packages from the link page:

Deluge Team has recently announced its BitTorrent client v1.3.8. Later the same day, Deluge 1.3.9 was released with a quick fix that was missed in the previous release.

Deluge is a full-featured ​BitTorrent client for Linux, OS X, Unix and Windows. It uses ​libtorrent in its backend and features multiple user-interfaces including: GTK+, web and console. It has been designed using the client server model with a daemon process that handles all the bittorrent activity. The Deluge daemon is able to run on headless machines with the user-interfaces being able to connect remotely from any platform.

Install / Upgrade Deluge in Ubuntu:

The latest packages has been made into the Deluge Team PPA, available for Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 10.04, and derivatives.

Press Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard to open terminal. When it opens, run commands below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:deluge-team/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install deluge

Above commands will add the Deluge Team PPA and install the GTK version in your Ubuntu system. Once installed, start it from Unity dash or menu.

If you want to install the web UI, run the command below to install the daemon after added the PPA:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install deluge-web deluged

Start the daemon by running deluge-web & in terminal and go to localhost:8112 (or http://serverip:8112) in your web browser. The default password is deluge.

Also, you can install the console ui by installing the packages deluge-console and deluged.

Transmission, the default bittorrent client comes with Ubuntu installation, gets a new release with various bug fixes, libraries updates and some new features.

If you don’t want to keep the PPA, remove it after the app installed:
